Numbers 8:15 - 8:26
8:15 And after this the Levites will come to serve at the tent of assembly, and you will purify them, and you will offer them as a wave offering.
8:16 For they are given to me exclusively from the midst of the Israelites. I have taken them for myself in place of the firstborn of every womb, every firstborn from the Israelites.
8:17 For every firstborn among the Israelites is mine, both humankind and animal. On the day I destroyed every firstborn in the land of Egypt I consecrated them to me,
8:18 and I have taken the Levites in the place of every firstborn among the Israelites.
8:19 And I have given the Levites; they are given to Aaron and his sons from the midst of the Israelites to do the work of the Israelites in the tent of the assembly and to make atonement for the Israelites, so a plague will not be among the Israelites when the Israelites come near the sanctuary.”
8:20 And Moses and Aaron and the entire community of the Israelites did to the Levites; everything that Yahweh commanded Moses concerning the Levites, the Israelites did to them.
8:21 And the Levites purified themselves, and they washed their garments, and Aaron offered them as a wave offering before Yahweh; and Aaron made atonement for them to purify them.
8:22 After this the Levites came to do their work in the tent of assembly before Aaron and his sons. Just as Yahweh commanded Moses concerning the Levities, so they did to them.
8:23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
8:24 “This is what is for the Levites: those twenty-five years old and above will come to help with the service in the work of the tent of assembly;
8:25 and those fifty years old will return from the service of the work and will serve no longer.
8:26 They can attend their brothers in the tent of assembly to keep their responsibilities, but they will not do work. This is what you will do concerning the Levities and their responsibilities.”
NIRV translation
Numbers 8:15 - 8:26
8:15 “Make the Levites pure. Give them to me as a wave offering. Then they must come to do their work at the Tent of Meeting.
8:16 They are the men of Israel who will be given to me completely. I have taken them to be my own. I have taken them in place of every son who is born first in his family in Israel.
8:17 “Every male that is born first in Israel belongs to me. That is true whether it is a man or an animal. I struck down all of the males that were born first to a mother in Egypt. Then I set apart for myself all of the males that were born first in Israel.
8:18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all of the sons who are born first in Israel.
8:19 “I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons. I have taken them from all of the men of Israel. I have appointed them to do the work at the Tent of Meeting. They will do it in place of the men of Israel.
“That is how they will keep the men of Israel from being guilty when they go near the sacred tent. Then no plague will strike the people of Israel when they go near the tent.”
8:20 So Moses and Aaron and the whole community of Israel did with the Levites just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
8:21 The Levites made themselves pure. They washed their clothes. Then Aaron gave them to the Lord as a wave offering. That’s how he paid for their sin to make them pure.
8:22 After that, the Levites came to do their work at the Tent of Meeting. They worked under the direction of Aaron and his sons. And so Moses and Aaron and the whole community of Israel did with the Levites just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
8:23 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said,
8:24 “Here is what the Levites must do. Men who are 25 years old or more must come and take part in the work at the Tent of Meeting.
8:25 “But when they reach the age of 50, they must not work any longer. They must stop doing their regular work.
8:26 They can help their brothers with their duties at the Tent of Meeting. But they themselves should not do the work. That is how you must direct the Levites to do their work.”

Gospel — Luke 9:1-17
LEB translation
Luke 9:1-17
9:1 The Twelve Commissioned and Sent Out
And summoning the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all the demons and to cure diseases,
9:2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
9:3 And he said to them, “Take along nothing for the journey—neither a staff, nor a traveler’s bag, nor bread, nor money, nor to have two tunics apiece.
9:4 And into whatever house you enter, stay there and depart from there.
9:5 And as for all those who do not welcome you—when you depart from that town, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
9:6 So they departed and went throughout the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
9:7 Herod Perplexed About Jesus
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John has been raised from the dead,
9:8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and others that some prophet of ancient times had risen.
9:9 And Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he was wanting to see him.
9:10 The Feeding of Five Thousand
And when they returned, the apostles described to him all that they had done. And he took them along and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.
9:11 But when the crowds found out, they followed him, and welcoming them, he began to speak to them about the kingdom of God, and he cured those who had need of healing.
9:12 Now the day began to be far spent, and the twelve came up and said to him, “Send away the crowd so that they can go into the surrounding villages and farms to obtain lodging and find provisions, because we are here in a desolate place.
9:13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and purchase food for all these people.”
9:14 (For there were about five thousand men.) So he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
9:15 And they did so, and had them all sit down.
9:16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them and began giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
9:17 And they all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was picked up by them—twelve baskets of broken pieces.
NIRV translation
Luke 9:1-17
9:1 Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples
Jesus called the Twelve together. He gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to heal sicknesses.
9:2 Then he sent them out to preach about God’s kingdom and to heal those who were sick.
9:3 He told them, “Don’t take anything for the journey. Do not take a walking stick or a bag. Do not take any bread, money or extra clothes.
9:4 When you are invited into a house, stay there until you leave town.
9:5 Some people may not welcome you. If they don’t, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town. This will be a witness against the people living there.”
9:6 So the Twelve left. They went from village to village. They preached the good news and healed people everywhere.
9:7 Now Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything that was going on. He was bewildered, because some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.
9:8 Others were saying that Elijah had appeared. Still others were saying that a prophet of long ago had come back to life.
9:9 But Herod said, “I had John’s head cut off. So who is it that I hear such things about?” And he tried to see Jesus.
9:10 Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
The apostles returned. They told Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him. They went off by themselves to a town called Bethsaida.
9:11 But the crowds learned about it and followed Jesus. He welcomed them and spoke to them about God’s kingdom. He also healed those who needed to be healed.
9:12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him. They said, “Send the crowd away. They can go to the nearby villages and countryside. There they can find food and a place to stay. There is nothing here.”
9:13 Jesus replied, “You give them something to eat.”
The disciples answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. We would have to go and buy food for all this crowd.”
9:14 About 5,000 men were there.
But Jesus said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each.”
9:15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.
9:16 Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke them into pieces. Then he gave them to the disciples to set in front of the people.
9:17 All of them ate and were satisfied. The disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover pieces.
