Deuteronomy 1:11 - 1:21

1:11 Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, may he add to you as you are now a thousand times, and may he bless you just as he promised you.

1:12 How can I bear you by myself, your burden and your load and your strife?

1:13 Choose for yourselves wise and discerning and knowledgeable men for each of your tribes, and I will appoint them as your leaders.’

1:14 “And you answered me, and you said, ‘The thing you have said to do is good.’

1:15 And so I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and then I appointed them as leaders over you as commanders of groups of thousands and commanders of groups of hundreds and commanders of groups of fifties and commanders of groups of tens as officials for your tribes.

1:16 And at that time I instructed your judges, saying, ‘hear out your fellow men, and then judge fairly between a man and between his brother and between his opponent who is a resident alien.

1:17 You must not be partial in your judgment; hear out the small person as also the great person; do not be intimidated by any person, because the judgment is God’s; and the case that is too difficult for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it out.’

1:18 And so I instructed you at that time concerning all of the things that you should do.

1:19 “Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea.

1:20 I said to you, ‘You have reached the hill country of the Amorites that Yahweh our God is giving to us.

1:21 See, Yahweh your God has set before you the land; go up and possess it as Yahweh the God of your ancestors said to you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.’

Deuteronomy 1:11 - 1:21

1:11 The Lord is the God of your people. May he increase your numbers a thousand times. May he bless you, just as he promised he would.

1:12 But I can’t handle your problems and troubles all by myself. I can’t settle your arguments.

1:13 “So choose some wise men from each of your tribes. They must understand how to give good advice. The people must have respect for them. I will appoint those men to have authority over you.”

1:14 You answered me, “Your suggestion is good.”

1:15 So I took the leading men of your tribes who were wise and respected. I appointed them to have authority over you. I made them commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. I appointed them to be officials over the tribes.

1:16 Here is what I commanded your judges at that time. I said, “Listen to your people’s cases when they argue with one another. Judge them fairly. It doesn’t matter whether the case is between fellow Israelites or between an Israelite and an outsider.

1:17 When you judge them, treat everyone the same. Listen to those who are important and those who are not. Don’t be afraid of any man. God is the highest judge. Bring me any case that is too hard for you. I’ll listen to it.”

1:18 At that time I told you everything you should do.

1:19 Twelve Men Check Out the Land of Canaan The Lord our God commanded us to start out from Mount Horeb. So we did. We went toward the hill country of the Amorites. We traveled all through the huge and terrible desert you saw. Finally, we reached Kadesh Barnea.

1:20 Then I said to you, “You have reached the hill country of the Amorites. The Lord our God is giving it to us.

1:21 The Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take it. Do what the Lord says. He’s the God of your people. Don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope.”

1:18 וָאֲצַוֶּ֥ה va.'a.tza.Veh and/ I commanded אֶתְכֶ֖ם 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you בָּעֵ֣ת ba.'Et at the/ time הַהִ֑וא ha.Hiv' <the>/ that אֵ֥ת 'et <obj.> כָּל־ kol- all הַדְּבָרִ֖ים ha.de.va.Rim the/ things אֲשֶׁ֥ר 'a.Sher which תַּעֲשֽׂוּן׃ ta.'a.Sun you will do/ !

1:12 Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain that is called Olive Grove which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

1:13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying—Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James.

1:14 All these were busily engaged with one mind in prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brothers.

1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (and it was a crowd of persons of about one hundred twenty at the same place) and said,

1:16 “Men and brothers, it was necessary that the scripture be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit proclaimed beforehand through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus,

1:17 because he was counted among us and received a share in this ministry.”

1:18 (Now this man acquired a field for the wages of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines spilled out.

1:19 And it became known to all who live in Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own language “Akeldama,” that is, “Field of Blood.”)

1:20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms, ‘Let his residence become deserted, and let there be no one to live in it,’ and, ‘Let another person take his position.’

1:21 Therefore it is necessary for one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,

1:22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us—one of these men must become a witness of his resurrection together with us.”

1:23 And they proposed two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was called Justus) and Matthias.

1:24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show clearly which one of these two you have chosen

1:25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to depart to his own place.”

1:26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was added to serve with the eleven apostles.

Acts 1:12 - 1:26

1:12 Matthias Is Chosen to Take the Place of Judas The apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. It is almost a mile from the city.

1:13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Peter, John, James and Andrew were there. Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew were there too. So were James, son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas, son of James.

1:14 They all came together regularly to pray. The women joined them too. So did Jesus’ mother Mary and his brothers.

1:15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers. About 120 of them were there.

1:16 Peter said, “Brothers, a long time ago the Holy Spirit spoke through David’s mouth about Judas. What he said in Scripture had to come true. Judas was the guide for the men who arrested Jesus.

1:17 But Judas was one of us. He shared with us in our work for God.”

1:18 Judas bought a field with the reward he got for the evil thing he had done. He fell down headfirst in the field. His body burst open. All his insides spilled out.

1:19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this. So they called that field Akeldama. In their language, Akeldama means The Field of Blood.

1:20 Peter said, “Here is what is written in the book of Psalms. It says, “‘May his home be deserted. May no one live in it.’ () The Psalms also say, “‘Let someone else take his place as leader.’ ()

1:21 So we need to choose someone to take his place. It will have to be a man who was with us the whole time the Lord Jesus lived among us.

1:22 That time began when John was baptizing. It ended when Jesus was taken up from us. The one we choose must join us in giving witness that Jesus rose from the dead.”

1:23 So they suggested two men. One was Joseph, who was called Barsabbas. He was also called Justus. The other man was Matthias.

1:24 Then they prayed. “Lord,” they said, “you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen.

1:25 Show us who should take the place of Judas as an apostle. He gave up being an apostle to go where he belongs.”

1:26 Then they cast lots. Matthias was chosen. So he was added to the 11 apostles.

1:14 Οὗτοι These πάντες all ἦσαν were προσκαρτεροῦντες steadfastly continuing ὁμοθυμαδὸν with one accord τῇ <the> προσευχῇ in prayer καὶ ˍˍand τῇ ˍˍ<the> δεήσει ˍˍin supplication σὺν with the γυναιξὶν [the] women καὶ and Μαριὰμ Mary τῇ with the μητρὶ mother τοῦ <the> Ἰησοῦ of Jesus καὶ and σὺν ˍwith τοῖς the ἀδελφοῖς brothers αὐτοῦ.¶ of Him.

1:15 Καὶ And ἐν in ταῖς <the> ἡμέραις days ταύταις these ἀναστὰς having stood up Πέτρος Peter ἐν in μέσῳ [the] midst τῶν of the ἀδελφῶν brothers εἶπεν· he said — ἦν was τε then ὄχλος [the] number ὀνομάτων of names ἐπὶ together τὸ the αὐτὸ same ὡσεὶ about ἑκατὸν a hundred εἴκοσι· twenty —

1:17 ὅτι for κατηριθμημένος numbered ἦν he was ἐν among ἡμῖν us καὶ and ἔλαχεν was allotted τὸν the κλῆρον share τῆς of the διακονίας ministry ταύτης. this.

1:18 οὗτος This [man] μὲν indeed οὖν then ἐκτήσατο acquired χωρίον a field ἐκ out of τοῦ ˍthe μισθοῦ reward τῆς <the> ἀδικίας, of unrighteousness, καὶ and πρηνὴς headlong γενόμενος having fallen ἐλάκησεν he burst open μέσος in [the] middle καὶ and ἐξεχύθη gushed out πάντα all τὰ the σπλάγχνα intestines αὐτοῦ, of him,

1:19 καὶ And γνωστὸν known ἐγένετο it became πᾶσιν to all τοῖς those κατοικοῦσιν dwelling Ἰερουσαλήμ, in Jerusalem, ὥστε so that κληθῆναι to call τὸ the χωρίον field ἐκεῖνο that [one] τῇ <the> ἰδίᾳ in [their] own διαλέκτῳ language αὐτῶν of them Ἁκελδαμάχ Akeldama τοῦτ᾽ That ἔστιν is χωρίον Field αἵματος. of Blood.
