28:27 “Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with the skin rash that cannot be healed.
28:28 Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart.
28:29 And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed all the time, and there will not be anyone who will rescue you.
28:30 You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it.
28:31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right before you, and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and there shall not be anyone who rescues you.
28:32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on longingly for them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything.
28:33 A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.
28:34 You shall become mad because of what your eyes shall see.
28:35 Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which you will not be able to be healed, from the sole of your foot and up to your crown.
28:36 Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone.
28:37 And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there.

Deuteronomy 28:27 - 28:37
28:27 The Lord will send boils on you, just like the ones he sent on the Egyptians. You will have growths in your bodies and boils on your skin. You will itch all over. No one will be able to heal you.
28:28 The Lord will make you lose your mind. He will make you blind. You won’t know what’s going on.
28:29 Even at noon you will have to feel your way around like a blind person in the dark. You won’t have success in anything you do. Day after day you will be robbed and beaten down. No one will be able to save you.
28:30 You and a woman will promise to get married to each other. But another man will take her and rape her. You will build a house. But you won’t live in it. You will plant a vineyard. But you won’t eat a single grape from it.
28:31 Your ox will be killed right in front of your eyes. But you won’t eat any of it. Your donkey will be taken away from you by force. And you will never get it back. Your sheep will be given to your enemies. No one will be able to save them.
28:32 Your children will be given to another nation. Day after day you will watch for them to come back. But you will only wear out your eyes. You won’t be able to help your children.
28:33 A nation you don’t know anything about will eat what you work to produce on your land. You will be completely beaten down as long as you live.
28:34 The things you see will make you lose your mind.
28:35 The Lord will send painful boils on your knees and legs. No one will be able to heal them. They will cover you from head to toe.
28:36 The Lord will drive you out of the land. And he will drive out the king you place over you. All of you will go to a nation you and your people long ago didn’t know anything about. There you will worship other gods. They will be made out of wood and stone.
28:37 You will look very bad to all of the nations where the Lord sends you. They will be completely shocked when they see you. They will laugh at you and make fun of you.

17:16 Paul in Athens
Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he observed the city was full of idols.
17:17 So he was discussing in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.
17:18 And even some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him, and some were saying, “What does this babbler want to say?” But others said, “He appears to be a proclaimer of foreign deities,” because he was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.
17:19 And they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we learn what is this new teaching being proclaimed by you?
17:20 For you are bringing some astonishing things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.”
17:21 (Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who stayed there used to spend their time in nothing else than telling something or listening to something new.)
17:22 Paul Speaks to the Areopagus
So Paul stood there in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see you are very religious in every respect.
17:23 For as I was passing through and observing carefully your objects of worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed, ‘To an unknown God.’ Therefore what you worship without knowing it, this I proclaim to you—
17:24 the God who made the world and all the things in it. This one, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands,
17:25 nor is he served by human hands as if he needed anything, because he himself gives to everyone life and breath and everything.
17:26 And he made from one man every nation of humanity to live on all the face of the earth, determining their fixed times and the fixed boundaries of their habitation,
17:27 to search for God, if perhaps indeed they might feel around for him and find him. And indeed he is not far away from each one of us,
17:28 for in him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said: ‘For we also are his offspring.’
17:29 Therefore, because we are offspring of God, we ought not to think the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by human skill and thought.
17:30 Therefore although God has overlooked the times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent,
17:31 because he has set a day on which he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man who he has appointed, having provided proof to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
17:32 Now when they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed, but others said, “We will hear you about this again also.”
17:33 So Paul went out from the midst of them.
17:34 But some people joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

17:16 Paul Preaches in Athens
Paul was waiting for Silas and Timothy in Athens. He was very upset to see that the city was full of statues of gods.
17:17 So he went to the synagogue. There he talked with Jews and with Greeks who worshiped God. Each day he spoke with anyone who happened to be in the market place.
17:18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic thinkers began to argue with him. Some of them asked, “What is this fellow chattering about?” Others said, “He seems to be telling us about gods we’ve never heard of.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus. He was telling them that Jesus had risen from the dead.
17:19 They took him to a meeting of the Areopagus. There they said to him, “What is this new teaching you’re giving us?
17:20 You have some strange ideas. We’ve never heard them before. We want to know what they mean.”
17:21 All the people of Athens spent their time talking about and listening to the latest ideas. People from other lands who lived there did the same.
17:22 Then Paul stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus. He said, “Men of Athens! I see that you are very religious in every way.
17:23 As I walked around, I looked carefully at the things you worship. I even found an altar with to an unknown god written on it. Now I am going to tell you about this ‘unknown god’ that you worship.
17:24 “He is the God who made the world. He also made everything in it. He is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn’t live in temples built by hands.
17:25 He is not served by human hands. He doesn’t need anything. He himself gives life and breath to all people. He also gives them everything else they have.
17:26 From one man he made all the people of the world. Now they live all over the earth. He decided exactly when they should live. And he decided exactly where they should live.
17:27 God did this so that people would seek him. Then perhaps they would reach out for him and find him. They would find him even though he is not far from any of us.
17:28 ‘In him we live and move and exist.’ As some of your own poets have also said, ‘We are his children.’
17:29 “Yes, we are God’s children. So we shouldn’t think that God is made out of gold or silver or stone. He isn’t a statue planned and made by clever people.
17:30 In the past, God didn’t judge people for what they didn’t know. But now he commands all people everywhere to turn away from their sins.
17:31 He has set a day when he will judge the world fairly. He has appointed a man to be its judge. God has proved this to all people by raising that man from the dead.”
17:32 When they heard Paul talk about the dead rising, some of them made fun of it. But others said, “We want to hear you speak about this again.”
17:33 So Paul left the meeting of the Areopagus.
17:34 A few men became followers of Paul and believed in Jesus. Dionysius was one of them. He was a member of the Areopagus. A woman named Damaris also became a believer. And so did some others.
