Exodus 33:12 - 34:26
33:12 Presence and Glory
And Moses said to Yahweh, “See, you are saying to me, ‘Take this people up.’ But you have not let me know whom you will send with me, and you yourself have said, ‘I know you by name, and you also have found favor in my eyes.’
33:13 And now if I have found favor in your eyes, make known to me, please, your way, and so I may know you so that I can find favor in your eyes. And see that this nation is your people.”
33:14 And he said, “My presence will go, and I will give you rest.”
33:15 And he said to him, “If your presence is not going, do not bring us up from here.
33:16 And by what will it be known then that I have found favor in your eyes, I and your people? Is it not by your going with us? And so we will be distinguished, I and your people, from all the people who are on the face of the ground.”
33:17 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Also I will do this thing that you have spoken, because you have found favor in my eyes and I have known you by name.”
33:18 And he said, “Please show me your glory.”
33:19 And he said, “I myself will cause all my goodness to pass over before you, and I will proclaim the name of Yahweh before you, and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show compassion to whom I will show compassion.”
33:20 But he said, “You are not able to see my face, because a human will not see me and live.”
33:21 And Yahweh said, “There is a place with me, and you will stand on the rock.
33:22 And when my glory passes over, I will put you in the rock’s crevice, and I will cover you with my hand until I pass over.
33:23 And I will remove my hand, and you will see my back, but my face will not be visible.”
34:1 Yahweh’s Description of Himself
And Yahweh said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
34:2 And be ready for the morning, and go up in the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself to me there on the top of the mountain.
34:3 And no one will go up with you, and neither let anyone be seen on all the mountain, nor let the sheep and goats and the cattle graze opposite that mountain.”
34:4 And Moses cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and he started early in the morning, and he went up to Mount Sinai, as Yahweh had commanded him, and he took in his hand the two stone tablets.
34:5 And Yahweh descended in the cloud, and he stood with him there, and he proclaimed the name of Yahweh.
34:6 And Yahweh passed over before him, and he proclaimed, “Yahweh, Yahweh, God, who is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding with loyal love and faithfulness,
34:7 keeping loyal love to the thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and he does not leave utterly unpunished, punishing the guilt of fathers on sons and on sons of sons on third and fourth generations.”
34:8 And Moses hurried and knelt down to the earth and worshiped.
34:9 And he said, “Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, Lord, let my Lord, please, go among us—indeed it is a stiff-necked people—and forgive our iniquity and our sin and take us as your possession.”
34:10 Covenant Stipulations
And he said, “Look, I am about to make a covenant. In front of all your people I will do wonders that have not been created on all the earth and among all the nations, and all the people among whom you are will see Yahweh’s work, because what I am about to do with you will be awesome.
34:11 “Keep for yourself what I myself have commanded you today. Look, I am about to drive from before you the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.
34:12 Be careful for yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you are going, lest it be a snare among you.
34:13 Rather, you will tear down their altars, and you will break their stone pillars, and you will cut off their Asherah poles.
34:14 For you will not bow in worship to another god, for ‘Yahweh Is Jealous’ is his name, he is a jealous God,
34:15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they prostitute themselves after their gods, and they sacrifice to their gods, and they invite you, and you eat their sacrifice,
34:16 and you take from their daughters for your sons, and their daughters prostitute themselves after their gods, and they cause your sons to prostitute themselves after their gods.
34:17 You will not make gods of cast metal for yourself.
34:18 “You will keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you will eat unleavened bread, which I commanded you, at the appointed time of the month of Abib, for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt.
34:19 Every first offspring of a womb is for me—all of your male livestock, the first offspring of cattle and small livestock.
34:20 But the first offspring of a donkey you will redeem with small livestock, and if you will not redeem it, you will break its neck. Every firstborn of your sons you will redeem, and you will not appear before me empty-handed.
34:21 Six days you will work, and on the seventh day you will rest; in the time of plowing and in the time of harvest you will rest.
34:22 And you yourself will observe the Feast of Weeks—the firstfruits of the wheat harvest—and the Feast of Harvest Gathering at the turn of the year.
34:23 Three times in the year all your males will appear before the Lord, Yahweh, the God of Israel,
34:24 because I will evict nations before you, and I will enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up to appear before Yahweh your God three times in the year.
34:25 “You will not slaughter the blood of my sacrifice on food with yeast, and the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover will not stay overnight to the morning.
34:26 The beginning of the firstfruits of your land you will bring to the house of Yahweh your God. You will not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
NIRV translation
Exodus 33:12 - 34:26
33:12 The Lord Shows Moses His Glory
Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people.’ But you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know your name. I know all about you. And I am pleased with you.’
33:13 If you are pleased with me, teach me more about yourself. Then I can know you. And I can continue to please you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
33:14 The Lord replied, “I will go with you. And I will give you rest.”
33:15 Then Moses said to him, “If you don’t go with us, don’t send us up from here.
33:16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and your people? You must go with us. How else will we be different from all of the other people on the face of the earth?”
33:17 The Lord said to Moses, “I will do exactly what you have asked. I am pleased with you. And I know your name. I know all about you.”
33:18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”
33:19 The Lord said, “I will make all of my goodness pass in front of you. And I will announce my name, The Lord, in front of you. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy. And I will show love to those I love.
33:20 But you can’t see my face,” he said. “No one can see me and stay alive.”
33:21 The Lord continued, “There is a place near me where you can stand on a rock.
33:22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in an opening in the rock. I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
33:23 Then I will remove my hand. You will see my back. But my face must not be seen.”
34:1 The New Stone Tablets
The Lord said to Moses, “Cut out two stone tablets that are just like the first ones. I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
34:2 “Be ready in the morning. Then come up on Mount Sinai. Meet with me there on top of the mountain.
34:3 No one must come with you. No one must be seen anywhere on the mountain. Not even the flocks and herds must be allowed to eat grass in front of the mountain.”
34:4 So Moses carved out two stone tablets that were just like the first ones. Early in the morning he went up Mount Sinai. He carried the two tablets in his hands. He did as the Lord had commanded him to do.
34:5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud. He stood there with Moses and announced his name, The Lord.
34:6 As he passed in front of Moses, he called out. He said, “I am the Lord, the Lord. I am a God who is tender and kind. I am gracious. I am slow to get angry. I am faithful and full of love.
34:7 I continue to show my love to thousands of people. I forgive those who do evil. I forgive those who refuse to obey. And I forgive those who sin. But I do not let guilty people go without punishing them. I punish the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the sin of their parents.”
34:8 Moses bowed down to the ground at once and worshiped.
34:9 “Lord,” he said, “if you are pleased with me, then go with us. Even though these people are stubborn, forgive the evil things we have done. Forgive our sin. And accept us as your people.”
34:10 Then the Lord said, “I am making a covenant with you. I will do wonderful things in front of all of your people. I will do miracles that have never been done before in any nation in the whole world. The people you live among will see the things that I, the Lord, will do for you. And they will see how wonderful those things really are.
34:11 “Obey what I command you today. I will drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites to make room for you.
34:12 “Be careful. Do not make a peace treaty with those who live in the land where you are going. They will be a trap to you.
34:13 Tear down their altars. Smash their sacred stones. Cut down the poles they use to worship the goddess Asherah.
34:14 Do not worship any other god. I am a jealous God. In fact, my name is Jealous.
34:15 “Be careful not to make a peace treaty with those who live in the land. They commit sin by offering sacrifices to their gods. They will invite you to eat their sacrifices.
34:16 You will choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons. And those daughters will commit sin by worshiping their gods. Then they will lead your sons to do the same thing.
34:17 “Do not make statues of gods.
34:18 “Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread that is made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Do it at the appointed time in the month of Abib. You came out of Egypt in that month.
34:19 “Every male animal that is born first to its mother belongs to me. That includes your livestock. It includes herds and flocks alike.
34:20 Sacrifice a lamb to buy back every male donkey that is born first to its mother. But if you do not buy the donkey back, break its neck. Buy back every oldest son.
“You must not come to worship me with your hands empty.
34:21 “Do your work in six days. But you must rest on the seventh day. Even when you are plowing your land or gathering your crops, you must rest on the seventh day.
34:22 “Celebrate the Feast of Weeks. Bring the first share of your wheat crop.
“Celebrate the Feast of Booths. Hold it in the fall.
34:23 “Three times a year all of your men must come to worship me. I am your Lord and King, the God of Israel.
34:24 I will drive out nations ahead of you. I will increase your territory. Go up three times a year to worship me. While you are doing that, I will keep others from wanting to take any of your land for themselves. I am the Lord your God.
34:25 “Do not include anything that is made with yeast when you offer me the blood of a sacrifice. You must not keep any of the meat from the sacrifice of the Passover Feast until morning.
34:26 “Bring the best of the first share of your crops to my house. I am the Lord your God.
“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

Gospel — Matthew 26:17 - 30
LEB translation
Matthew 26:17 - 30
26:17 Jesus’ Final Passover with the Disciples
Now on the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came up to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
26:18 And he said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near. I am celebrating the Passover with you with my disciples.”’
26:19 And the disciples did as Jesus directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
26:20 And when it was evening, he was reclining at table with the twelve disciples.
26:21 And while they were eating he said, “Truly I say to you, that one of you will betray me.”
26:22 And greatly distressed, each one began to say to him, “Surely I am not he, am I, Lord?”
26:23 And he answered and said, “The one who dips his hand in the bowl with me—this one will betray me.
26:24 The Son of Man is going just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if that man had not been born.”
26:25 And Judas, the one who was betraying him, answered and said, “Surely I am not he, am I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said it.”
26:26 The Lord’s Supper
Now while they were eating Jesus took bread and, after giving thanks, he broke it, and giving it to the disciples, he said, “Take, eat, this is my body.”
26:27 And after taking the cup and giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you,
26:28 for this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
26:29 But I tell you, from now on I will never drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.”
26:30 And after they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
NIRV translation
Matthew 26:17 - 30
26:17 The Lord’s Supper
It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The disciples came to Jesus. They asked, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
26:18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man. Tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover at your house with my disciples.”’”
26:19 So the disciples did what Jesus had told them to do. They prepared the Passover meal.
26:20 When evening came, Jesus was at the table with the Twelve.
26:21 While they were eating, he said, “What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you will hand me over to my enemies.”
26:22 The disciples became very sad. One after the other, they began to say to him, “It’s not I, Lord, is it?”
26:23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will hand me over.
26:24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
26:25 Judas was the one who was going to hand him over. He said, “It’s not I, Rabbi, is it?”
Jesus answered, “Yes. It is you.”
26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body.”
26:27 Then he took the cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. He said, “All of you drink from it.
26:28 This is my blood of the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many.
26:29 Here is what I tell you. From now on, I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
26:30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
