Numbers 13:1 - 13:20
13:1 Spies Sent to Spy Out the Land of Canaan
And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
13:2 “Send for yourself men, and let them explore the land of Canaan, which I am about to give to the Israelites; from each tribe of his father send one man, everyone a leader among them.”
13:3 So Moses sent them from the desert of Paran on the command of Yahweh; all of the men were leaders of the Israelites.
13:4 And these are their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur;
13:5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
13:6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;
13:7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
13:8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;
13:9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
13:10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
13:11 from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;
13:12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;
13:13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;
13:14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
13:15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.
13:16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua.
13:17 Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and he said to them, “Go up like this to the Negev, and go up into the hill country,
13:18 and you will see what the land is like and if the people who inhabit it are strong or weak, or whether they are few or many,
13:19 and whether the land that they are inhabiting is good or bad, and whether the cities they are inhabiting are camps or fortifications,
13:20 and whether the land is fertile or lean, and whether there are trees on it or not. You will show yourself courageous, and you will take some of the fruit of the land.” It was the time of first ripe grapes.

Numbers 13:1 - 13:20
13:1 Some Men Check Out the Land of Canaan
The Lord spoke to Moses. He said,
13:2 “Send some men to check out the land of Canaan. I am giving it to the people of Israel. Send one leader from each of Israel’s tribes.”
13:3 So Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. He sent them as the Lord had commanded. All of them were leaders of the people of Israel.
13:4 Here are their names.
There was Shammua from the tribe of Reuben. Shammua was the son of Zaccur.
13:5 There was Shaphat from the tribe of Simeon. Shaphat was the son of Hori.
13:6 There was Caleb from the tribe of Judah. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh.
13:7 There was Igal from the tribe of Issachar. Igal was the son of Joseph.
13:8 There was Hoshea from the tribe of Ephraim. Hoshea was the son of Nun.
13:9 There was Palti from the tribe of Benjamin. Palti was the son of Raphu.
13:10 There was Gaddiel from the tribe of Zebulun. Gaddiel was the son of Sodi.
13:11 There was Gaddi from the tribe of Manasseh. Gaddi was the son of Susi. Manasseh was a tribe of Joseph.
13:12 There was Ammiel from the tribe of Dan. Ammiel was the son of Gemalli.
13:13 There was Sethur from the tribe of Asher. Sethur was the son of Michael.
13:14 There was Nahbi from the tribe of Naphtali. Nahbi was the son of Vophsi.
13:15 There was Geuel from the tribe of Gad. Geuel was the son of Maki.
13:16 Those are the men Moses sent to check out the land. He gave the name Joshua to Hoshea, the son of Nun.
13:17 Moses sent them to check out Canaan. He said, “Go up through the Negev Desert. Go on into the central hill country.
13:18 See what the land is like. See whether the people who live there are strong or weak. See whether they are few or many.
13:19 “What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Do the towns have high walls around them or not?
13:20 How is the soil? Is it rich land or poor land? Are there trees on it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.” It was the season for the first ripe grapes.

Gospel — Luke 11:29-54
LEB translation
Luke 11:29-54
11:29 The Sign of Jonah
And as the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation! It demands a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah!
11:30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.
11:31 The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here!
11:32 The people of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here!
11:33 Light and Darkness
“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a bushel basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see the light.
11:34 Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is sincere, your whole body is full of light also. But when it is evil, your body is dark also.
11:35 Therefore pay careful attention that the light in you is not darkness!
11:36 If therefore your whole body is full of light, not having any part dark, it will be completely full of light, as when the lamp with its light gives light to you.”
11:37 Pharisees and Legal Experts Denounced
And as he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to have a meal with him, and he went in and reclined at table.
11:38 And the Pharisee, when he saw it, was astonished that he did not first wash before the meal.
11:39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but your inside is full of greediness and wickedness.
11:40 Fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
11:41 But give as charitable giving the things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.
11:42 “But woe to you, Pharisees, because you pay a tenth of mint and rue and every garden herb, and neglect justice and love for God! But it was necessary to do these things without neglecting those things also.
11:43 Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the best seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces!
11:44 Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, and the people who walk over them do not know it!
11:45 And one of the legal experts answered and said to him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also!”
11:46 So he said, “Woe to you also, legal experts, because you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers!
11:47 Woe to you, because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them!
11:48 As a result you are witnesses, and you approve of the deeds of your fathers, because they killed them and you build their tombs!
11:49 For this reason also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’
11:50 so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,
11:51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation!
11:52 Woe to you, legal experts, because you have taken away the key to knowledge! You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering!”
11:53 And when he departed from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly hostile, and to question him closely about many things,
11:54 plotting to catch him with reference to something he might say.
NIRV translation
Luke 11:29-54
11:29 The Miraculous Sign of Jonah
As the crowds grew larger, Jesus spoke to them. “The people of today are evil,” he said. “They ask for a miraculous sign from God. But none will be given except the sign of Jonah.
11:30 He was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign from God to the people of today.
11:31 “The Queen of the South will stand up on judgment day with the men now living. And she will prove that they are guilty. She came from very far away to listen to Solomon’s wisdom. And now one who is more important than Solomon is here.
11:32 “The men of Nineveh will stand up on judgment day with the people now living. And the Ninevites will prove that those people are guilty. The men of Nineveh turned away from their sins when Jonah preached to them. And now one who is more important than Jonah is here.
11:33 The Eye Is the Lamp of the Body
“No one lights a lamp and hides it. No one puts it under a bowl. Instead, people put a lamp on its stand. Then those who come in can see the light.
11:34 “Your eye is like a lamp for your body. Suppose your eyes are good. Then your whole body also is full of light. But suppose your eyes are bad. Then your body also is full of darkness.
11:35 So make sure that the light inside you is not darkness.
11:36 “Suppose your whole body is full of light. And suppose no part of it is dark. Then your body will be completely lit up. It will be as when the light of a lamp shines on you.”
11:37 Six Warnings
Jesus finished speaking. Then a Pharisee invited him to eat with him. So Jesus went in and took his place at the table.
11:38 But the Pharisee noticed that Jesus did not wash before the meal. He was surprised.
11:39 Then the Lord spoke to him. “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish,” he said. “But inside you are full of greed and evil.
11:40 You foolish people! Didn’t the one who made the outside make the inside also?
11:41 Give to poor people what is inside the dish. Then everything will be clean for you.
11:42 “How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! You give God a tenth of your garden plants, such as mint and rue. But you have forgotten to be fair and to love God. You should have practiced the last things without failing to do the first.
11:43 “How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the most important seats in the synagogues. You love having people greet you in the market places.
11:44 “How terrible for you! You are like graves that are not marked. People walk over them without knowing it.”
11:45 An authority on the law spoke to Jesus. He said, “Teacher, when you say things like that, you say bad things about us too.”
11:46 Jesus replied, “How terrible for you authorities on the law! You put such heavy loads on people that they can hardly carry them. But you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
11:47 “How terrible for you! You build tombs for the prophets. It was your people of long ago who killed them.
11:48 So you give witness that you agree with what your people did long ago. They killed the prophets, and now you build the prophets’ tombs.
11:49 “So God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles to them. They will kill some. And they will try to hurt others.’
11:50 So the people of today will be punished. They will pay for all the prophets’ blood spilled since the world began.
11:51 I mean from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the temple. Yes, I tell you, the people of today will be punished for all these things.
11:52 “How terrible for you authorities on the law! You have taken away the key to the door of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered. And you have stood in the way of those who were entering.”
11:53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law strongly opposed him. They threw a lot of questions at him.
11:54 They set traps for him. They wanted to catch him in something he might say.
