Numbers 14:8 - 14:25
14:8 If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey.
14:9 Only do not rebel against Yahweh, and you will not fear the people of the land, because they will be our food. Their protection has been turned from them; Yahweh is with us. You should not fear them.”
14:10 And all the community said to stone them with stones, but the glory of Yahweh appeared in the tent of assembly among the Israelites.
14:11 And Yahweh said to Moses, “How long until this people will despise me, and how long until they will not believe in me, and in all the signs that I have done in their midst?
14:12 I will strike them with disease, and I will dispossess them; I will make you into a greater and stronger nation than them.”
14:13 And Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear that you brought up this people from their midst in your power,
14:14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They heard that you, Yahweh, are in the midst of this people, that you are seen eye to eye, and your cloud is standing over them, and in a column of cloud you go before them by day and in a column of fire at night.
14:15 But if you destroy this people all at once, the nations that will have heard your message will say,
14:16 ‘Yahweh was unable to bring this people in the land that he swore by an oath, and he slaughtered them in the desert.’
14:17 But now, please, let the power of my Lord be great, just has you spoke,
14:18 ‘Yahweh is slow to anger
and great of loyal love,
forgiving sin and rebellion;
but surely he leaves nothing unpunished,
visiting the sin of the fathers on the sons
to the third and fourth generations.’
14:19 Please forgive the sin of this people according to the greatness of your loyal love, just as you forgave this people, from Egypt until now.”
14:20 Yahweh said, “I have forgiven them according to your word;
14:21 but as I am alive, the glory of Yahweh will fill all the earth.
14:22 But because all the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the desert yet tested me these ten times and did not listen to my voice,
14:23 they will not see the land that I swore by oath to their ancestors, and all those who despised me will not see it.
14:24 But my servant Caleb, because another spirit was with him, he remained true after me, and I will bring him into the land that he entered, and his offspring will take possession of it.
14:25 And the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; tomorrow turn and set out for the desert by way of the Red Sea.”
NIRV translation
Numbers 14:8 - 14:25
14:8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he’ll lead us into that land. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. He’ll give it to us.
14:9 “But don’t refuse to obey him. And don’t be afraid of the people of the land. We will swallow them up. The Lord is with us. So nothing can save them. Don’t be afraid of them.”
14:10 But all of the people talked about killing Joshua and Caleb by throwing stones at them.
Then the glory of the Lord appeared at the Tent of Meeting. All of the people of Israel saw it.
14:11 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “How long will these people make fun of me? How long will they refuse to believe in me? They refuse even though I have done many miraculous signs among them.
14:12 So I will strike them down with a plague. I will destroy them. But I will make you into a greater and stronger nation than they are.”
14:13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it. You used your power to bring these people up from among them.
14:14 “And the Egyptians will tell the people who live in Canaan about it. Lord, they have already heard a lot about you. They’ve heard that you are with these people. They’ve heard that you have been seen face to face. They’ve been told that your cloud stays over them. They’ve heard that you go in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day. They’ve been told that you go in front of them in a pillar of fire at night.
14:15 “Suppose you put these people to death all at one time. Then the nations who have heard those things about you will talk. They’ll say,
14:16 ‘The Lord took an oath. He promised to give these people the land of Canaan. But he wasn’t able to bring them into it. So he killed them in the desert.’
14:17 “Now, Lord, show your strength. You have said,
14:18 ‘I am the Lord. I am slow to get angry. I am full of love. I forgive those who sin. I forgive those who refuse to obey. But I do not let guilty people go without punishing them. I punish the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the sin of their parents.’
14:19 “Lord, your love is great. So forgive the sin of these people. Forgive them just as you have done from the time they left Egypt until now.”
14:20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, just as you asked.
14:21 You can be sure that I live. You can be sure that my glory fills the whole earth.
14:22 “And you can be just as sure that these men will not see the land I promised to give them. They have seen my glory. They have seen the miraculous signs I did in Egypt. And they have seen what I did in the desert. But they did not obey me. And they have put me to the test ten times.
14:23 So not even one of them will ever see the land I promised with an oath to give to their people of long ago. No one who has made fun of me will ever see it.
14:24 “But my servant Caleb has a different spirit. He follows me with his whole heart. So I will bring him into the land he went to. And his children after him will receive land there.
14:25 “The Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys. So turn back tomorrow. Start out toward the desert. Go along the way that leads to the Red Sea.”

Gospel — Luke 12:35-59
LEB translation
Luke 12:35-59
12:35 On the Alert for the Master’s Return
“You must be prepared for action and your lamps burning.
12:36 And you, be like people who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that when he comes back and knocks, they can open the door for him immediately.
12:37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he returns! Truly I say to you that he will dress himself for service and have them recline at the table and will come by and serve them.
12:38 Even if he should come back in the second or in the third watch of the night and find them like this, blessed are they!
12:39 But understand this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.
12:40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not think he will come.”
12:41 A Faithful Slave and an Unfaithful Slave
And Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us, or also for everyone?”
12:42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful wise manager whom the master will put in charge over his servants to give them their food allowance at the right time?
12:43 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find so doing when he comes back.
12:44 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
12:45 But if that slave should say to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time to return,’ and he begins to beat the male slaves and the female slaves and to eat and drink and get drunk,
12:46 the master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in two and assign his place with the unbelievers.
12:47 And that slave who knew the will of his master and did not prepare or do according to his will will be given a severe beating.
12:48 But the one who did not know and did things deserving blows will be given a light beating. And from everyone to whom much has been given, much will be demanded, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will ask him for even more.
12:49 Not Peace, But a Sword of Divisiveness
“I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish that it had been kindled already!
12:50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how I am distressed until it is accomplished!
12:51 Do you think that I have come to grant peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!
12:52 For from now on there will be five in one household, divided three against two and two against three.
12:53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
12:54 The Signs of the Times
And he also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud coming up in the west, you say at once, ‘A rainstorm is coming,’ and so it happens.
12:55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be burning heat,’ and it happens.
12:56 Hypocrites! You know how to evaluate the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it you do not know how to evaluate this present time?
12:57 Settle Accounts Quickly
And why do you not also judge for yourselves what is right?
12:58 For as you are going with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to come to a settlement with him on the way, so that he will not drag you to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff will throw you into prison.
12:59 I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid back even the last cent!”
NIRV translation
Luke 12:35-59
12:35 Be Ready
“Be dressed and ready to serve. Keep your lamps burning.
12:36 Be like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding dinner. When he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.
12:37 “It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready when he comes. What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will then dress himself so he can serve them. He will have them take their places at the table. And he will come and wait on them.
12:38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready. It will even be good if he comes very late at night.
12:39 “But here is what you must understand. Suppose the owner of the house knew at what hour the robber was coming. He would not have let his house be broken into.
12:40 You also must be ready. The Son of Man will come at an hour when you don’t expect him.”
12:41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this story to us, or to everyone?”
12:42 The Lord answered, “Suppose a master puts one of his servants in charge of his other servants. The servant’s job is to give them the food they are to receive at the right time. The master wants a faithful and wise manager for this.
12:43 It will be good for the servant if the master finds him doing his job when the master returns.
12:44 What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will put that servant in charge of everything he owns.
12:45 “But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time to come back.’ Suppose he begins to beat the other servants. Suppose he feeds himself. And suppose he drinks until he gets drunk.
12:46 The master of that servant will come back on a day the servant doesn’t expect him. He will return at an hour the servant doesn’t know. Then the master will cut him to pieces. He will send him to the place where unbelievers go.
12:47 “Suppose a servant knows his master’s wishes. But he doesn’t get ready. And he doesn’t do what his master wants. That servant will be beaten with many blows.
12:48 “But suppose the servant does not know his master’s wishes. And suppose he does things for which he should be punished. He will be beaten with only a few blows.
“Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. Even more will be asked of the person who is supposed to take care of much.
12:49 Jesus Will Separate People From One Another
“I have come to bring fire on the earth. How I wish the fire had already started!
12:50 But I have a baptism of suffering to go through. And I will be very troubled until it is completed.
12:51 “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you. I have come to separate people.
12:52 From now on there will be five members in a family, each one against the other. There will be three against two and two against three.
12:53 They will be separated. Father will turn against son and son against father. Mother will turn against daughter and daughter against mother. Mother-in-law will turn against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
12:54 Understanding What Is Happening
Jesus spoke to the crowd. He said, “You see a cloud rising in the west. Right away you say, ‘It’s going to rain.’ And it does.
12:55 The south wind blows. So you say, ‘It’s going to be hot.’ And it is.
12:56 You pretenders! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and the sky. Why can’t you understand the meaning of what is happening right now?
12:57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
12:58 Suppose someone has a claim against you, and you are on your way to court. Try hard to settle the matter on the way. If you don’t, that person may drag you off to the judge. The judge may turn you over to the officer. And the officer may throw you into prison.
12:59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny!”
