Exodus 1:18 - 2:10

1:18 And the king of Egypt summoned the midwives, and he said to them, “Why have you done this thing and let the boys live?”

1:19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, because they are vigorous; before the midwife comes to them, they have given birth.”

1:20 And God did the midwives good, and the Israelite people became many and were very numerous.

1:21 And so because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

1:22 And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you will throw into the Nile, and every daughter you will let live.”

2:1 The Birth and Early Life of Moses And a man from the family of Levi went, and he took a descendent of Levi.

2:2 And the woman conceived, and she gave birth to a son, and she saw him, that he was a fine baby, and she hid him three months.

2:3 But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him, and she coated it with tar and with pitch, and she placed the boy in it, and she placed it among the reeds on the bank of the Nile.

2:4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.

2:5 And the daughter of Pharaoh went down to wash at the Nile, while her maidservants were walking alongside the Nile, and she saw the basket in the midst of the reeds, and she sent her slave woman for it and took it

2:6 and opened it and saw him—the boy—and it was a lad weeping, and she had compassion for him and said, “This must be from the boys of the Hebrews.”

2:7 And his sister said to the daughter of Pharaoh, “Shall I go and call for you a woman from the Hebrews who is nursing so that she will nurse the boy for you?”

2:8 And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, “Go.” And the girl went, and she called the mother of the boy.

2:9 And the daughter of Pharaoh said, “Take this boy and nurse him for me, and I myself will give you wages, and the woman took the boy, and she nursed him.

2:10 And the boy grew, and she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he became her son, and she called his name Moses, and she said, “Because I drew him out from the water.”

Exodus 1:18 - 2:10

1:18 Then the king of Egypt sent for the women. He asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”

1:19 The women answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like the women of Egypt. They are strong. They have their babies before we get there.”

1:20 So God was kind to Shiphrah and Puah. And the people of Israel increased their numbers more and more.

1:21 Shiphrah and Puah had respect for God. So he gave them families of their own.

1:22 Then Pharaoh gave an order to all of his people. He said, “You must throw every baby boy into the Nile River. But let every baby girl live.”

2:1 Moses Is Born A man and a woman from the tribe of Levi got married.

2:2 She became pregnant and had a son by him. She saw that her baby was a fine child. So she hid him for three months.

2:3 After that, she couldn’t hide him any longer. So she got a basket that was made out of the stems of tall grass. She coated it with tar. Then she placed the child in it. She put the basket in the tall grass that grew along the bank of the Nile River.

2:4 The child’s sister wasn’t very far away. She wanted to see what would happen to him.

2:5 Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile River to take a bath. Her attendants were walking along the bank of the river. She saw the basket in the tall grass. So she sent her female slave to get it.

2:6 When she opened it, she saw the baby. He was crying. She felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

2:7 Then his sister spoke to Pharaoh’s daughter. She asked, “Do you want me to go and get one of the Hebrew women? She could nurse the baby for you.”

2:8 “Yes. Go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother.

2:9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby. Nurse him for me. I’ll pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

2:10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter. And he became her son. She named him Moses. She said, “I pulled him out of the water.”

1:18 וַיִּקְרָ֤א vai.yik.Ra' and/ he summoned מֶֽלֶךְ־ Me.lekh- [the] king of מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ mitz.Ra.yim Egypt לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֔ת lam.ya.le.Dot <to> the/ midwives וַיֹּ֣אמֶר vai.Yo.mer and/ he said לָהֶ֔ן la.Hen to <the>/ them מַדּ֥וּעַ ma.Du.a' why? עֲשִׂיתֶ֖ן 'a.si.Ten have you done הַדָּבָ֣ר ha.da.Var the/ thing הַזֶּ֑ה ha.Zeh <the>/ this וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ va.te.chai.Yei.na and/ have you let live? אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הַיְלָדִֽים׃ hay.la.Dim the/ [male] children

1:19 וַתֹּאמַ֤רְןָ va.to.Mar.na and/ they said הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ ham.ya.le.Dot the/ midwives אֶל־ 'el- to פַּרְעֹ֔ה par.'Oh Pharaoh כִּ֣י ki for לֹ֧א lo' not כַנָּשִׁ֛ים kha.na.Shim [are] like the/ women הַמִּצְרִיֹּ֖ת ha.mitz.ri.Yot <the>/ Egyptian הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת ha.'iv.ri.Yot the/ Hebrew [women] כִּֽי־ ki- that חָי֣וֹת cha.Yot [are] vigorous הֵ֔נָּה He.nah they בְּטֶ֨רֶם be.Te.rem <in>/ before תָּב֧וֹא ta.Vo' she comes אֲלֵהֶ֛ן 'a.le.Hen to/ them הַמְיַלֶּ֖דֶת ham.ya.Le.det the/ midwife וְיָלָֽדוּ׃ ve.ya.La.du and/ they give birth

1:20 וַיֵּ֥יטֶב vai.Yei.tev and/ he did good אֱלֹהִ֖ים 'E.lo.Him God לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֑ת lam.ya.le.Dot to the/ midwives וַיִּ֧רֶב vai.Yi.rev and/ it increased הָעָ֛ם ha.'Am the/ people וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ vai.ya.'atz.Mu and/ they became mighty מְאֹֽד׃ me.'Od exceedingly

1:21 וַיְהִ֕י vay.Hi and/ it was כִּֽי־ ki- that יָֽרְא֥וּ ya.re.'U they feared הַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת ham.ya.le.Dot the/ midwives אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים ha.'E.lo.Him <the>/ God וַיַּ֥עַשׂ vai.Ya.'as and/ he appointed לָהֶ֖ם la.Hem for <the>/ them בָּתִּֽים׃ ba.Tim households

1:22 וַיְצַ֣ו vay.Tzav and/ he commanded פַּרְעֹ֔ה par.'Oh Pharaoh לְכָל־ le.khol to/ all עַמּ֖וֹ a.Mo people/ his לֵאמֹ֑ר le.Mor <to>/ saying כָּל־ kol- every הַבֵּ֣ן ha.Ben <the>/ son הַיִּלּ֗וֹד hai.yi.Lod <the>/ born הַיְאֹ֙רָה֙ hay.'O.rah the/ River/ towards תַּשְׁלִיכֻ֔הוּ tash.li.Khu.hu you will throw/ him וְכָל־ ve.khol and/ every הַבַּ֖ת ha.Bat <the>/ daughter תְּחַיּֽוּן׃ ס te.chai.Yun you will let live/ !

2:1 וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ vai.Ye.lekh and/ he went אִ֖ישׁ 'ish a man מִבֵּ֣ית mi.Beit from/ [the] house of לֵוִ֑י le.Vi Levi וַיִּקַּ֖ח vai.yi.Kach and/ he took אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> בַּת־ bat- [the] daughter of לֵוִֽי׃ le.Vi Levi

2:2 וַתַּ֥הַר va.Ta.har and/ she conceived הָאִשָּׁ֖ה ha.'i.Shah the/ woman וַתֵּ֣לֶד va.Te.led and/ she bore בֵּ֑ן Ben a son וַתֵּ֤רֶא va.Te.re' and/ she saw אֹתוֹ֙ 'o.To <obj.>/ him כִּי־ ki- that ט֣וֹב Tov [was] good ה֔וּא Hu' he וַֽתִּצְפְּנֵ֖הוּ va.titz.pe.Ne.hu and/ she hid/ him שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה she.lo.Shah three יְרָחִֽים׃ ye.ra.Chim months

2:3 וְלֹא־ ve.lo'- and/ not יָכְלָ֣ה ya.khe.Lah she was able עוֹד֮ 'Od still הַצְּפִינוֹ֒ ha.tze.fi.No to hide/ him וַתִּֽקַּֽח־ va.ti.kach- and/ she took לוֹ֙ lo for <the>/ him תֵּ֣בַת Te.vat a basket of גֹּ֔מֶא Go.me' papyrus וַתַּחְמְרָ֥ה va.tach.me.Rah and/ sealed it/ she בַחֵמָ֖ר va.che.Mar with <the>/ bitumen וּבַזָּ֑פֶת u.va.Za.fet and/ with <the>/ pitch וַתָּ֤שֶׂם va.Ta.sem and/ she put בָּהּ֙ bah in <the>/ it אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הַיֶּ֔לֶד hai.Ye.led the/ child וַתָּ֥שֶׂם va.Ta.sem and/ she put [it] בַּסּ֖וּף ba.Suf among the/ rush[es] עַל־ 'al- at שְׂפַ֥ת se.Fat [the] bank of הַיְאֹֽר׃ hay.'Or the/ River

2:4 וַתֵּתַצַּ֥ב va.te.ta.Tzav and/ she stood אֲחֹת֖וֹ 'a.cho.To sister/ his מֵרָחֹ֑ק me.ra.Chok from/ a distance לְדֵעָ֕ה le.de.'Ah to/ know מַה־ mah- what? יֵּעָשֶׂ֖ה ye.'a.Seh will it be done לֽוֹ׃ lo to <the>/ him

2:5 וַתֵּ֤רֶד va.Te.red and/ she went down בַּת־ bat- [the] daughter of פַּרְעֹה֙ par.'Oh Pharaoh לִרְחֹ֣ץ lir.Chotz to/ bathe עַל־ 'al- at הַיְאֹ֔ר hay.'Or the/ River וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֥יהָ ve.na.'a.ro.Tei.ha and/ female attendants/ her הֹלְכֹ֖ת ho.le.Khot [were] walking עַל־ 'al- on יַ֣ד yad [the] side of הַיְאֹ֑ר hay.'Or the/ River וַתֵּ֤רֶא va.Te.re' and/ she saw אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הַתֵּבָה֙ ha.te.Vah the/ basket בְּת֣וֹךְ be.Tokh in/ among הַסּ֔וּף ha.Suf the/ rush[es] וַתִּשְׁלַ֥ח va.tish.Lach and/ she sent אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> אֲמָתָ֖הּ 'a.ma.Tah maid/ her וַתִּקָּחֶֽהָ va.ti.ka.Che.ha and/ fetched it/ she

2:6 וַתִּפְתַּח֙ va.tif.Tach and/ she opened [it] וַתִּרְאֵ֣הוּ va.tir.'E.hu and/ she saw/ him אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הַיֶּ֔לֶד hai.Ye.led the/ child וְהִנֵּה־ ve.hi.neh- and/ there! נַ֖עַר Na.'ar a lad בֹּכֶ֑ה bo.Kheh [was] crying וַתַּחְמֹ֣ל va.tach.Mol and/ she had compassion עָלָ֔יו 'a.Lav on/ him וַתֹּ֕אמֶר va.To.mer and/ she said מִיַּלְדֵ֥י mi.yal.Dei [is] one of/ [the] children of הָֽעִבְרִ֖ים ha.'iv.Rim the/ Hebrews זֶֽה׃ Zeh this

2:7 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר va.To.mer and/ she said אֲחֹתוֹ֮ 'a.cho.To sister/ his אֶל־ 'el- to בַּת־ bat- [the] daughter of פַּרְעֹה֒ par.'Oh Pharaoh הַאֵלֵ֗ךְ ha.'e.Lekh ¿/ will I go וְקָרָ֤אתִי ve.ka.Ra.ti and/ will I call? לָךְ֙ loKh for <the>/ you אִשָּׁ֣ה 'i.Shah a woman מֵינֶ֔קֶת mei.Ne.ket a suckling-nurse מִ֖ן min from הָעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת ha.'iv.ri.Yot the/ Hebrew [women] וְתֵינִ֥ק ve.tei.Nik so/ she may suckle לָ֖ךְ lakh for <the>/ you אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הַיָּֽלֶד׃ hai.Ya.led the/ child

1:9 The Baptism of Jesus And it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

1:10 And immediately as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being split apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.

1:11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

1:12 The Temptation of Jesus And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness.

1:13 And he was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

1:9 Καὶ And ἐγένετο it came to pass ἐν in ἐκείναις those ταῖς <the> ἡμέραις days ἦλθεν [that] came Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἀπὸ from Ναζαρὲτ Nazareth τῆς <the> Γαλιλαίας of Galilee καὶ and ἐβαπτίσθη was baptized εἰς in τὸν the Ἰορδάνην Jordan ὑπὸ by Ἰωάννου. John.

1:10 καὶ And εὐθὺς immediately ἀναβαίνων going up ἐκ from τοῦ the ὕδατος water εἶδεν he saw σχιζομένους tearing open τοὺς the οὐρανοὺς heavens καὶ and τὸ the πνεῦμα Spirit ὡς as περιστερὰν a dove καταβαῖνον descending εἰς upon αὐτόν· Him;

1:11 καὶ And φωνὴ a voice ἐγένετο came ἐκ out of τῶν the οὐρανῶν· heavens: σὺ You yourself εἶ are ὁ the υἱός Son μου of Mine ὁ the ἀγαπητός, beloved, ἐν in σοὶ you εὐδόκησα.¶ I am well pleased.

1:12 Καὶ And εὐθὺς immediately τὸ the πνεῦμα Spirit αὐτὸν Him ἐκβάλλει drives out εἰς into τὴν the ἔρημον. wilderness.

1:13 καὶ And ἦν He was ἐκεῖ ˍthere ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ wilderness τεσσεράκοντα forty ἡμέρας days πειραζόμενος being tempted ὑπὸ by τοῦ <the> σατανᾶ Satan καὶ And ἦν He was μετὰ with τῶν the θηρίων· wild animals; καὶ and οἱ the ἄγγελοι angels διηκόνουν were ministering αὐτῷ.¶ to Him.
