Genesis 25:19 - 26:5
25:19 Jacob and Esau
Now these are the generations of Isaac, the son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac,
25:20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-Aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, as his wife.
25:21 And Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. And Yahweh responded to his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
25:22 And the children in her womb jostled each other, and she said, “If it is going to be like this, why be pregnant?” And she went to inquire of Yahweh.
25:23 And Yahweh said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from birth shall be divided. And one people shall be stronger than the other. And the elder shall serve the younger.”
25:24 And when her days to give birth were completed, then—behold—twins were in her womb.
25:25 And the first came out red, all his body was like a hairy coat, so they called his name Esau.
25:26 And afterward his brother came out, and his hand grasped the heel of Esau, so his name was called Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old at their birth.
25:27 And the boys grew up. And Esau was a skilled hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents.
25:28 And Isaac loved Esau because he could eat of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
25:29 Once Jacob cooked a thick stew, and Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.
25:30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Give me some of that red stuff to gulp down, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom).
25:31 Then Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright first.”
25:32 And Esau said, “Look, I am going to die; now what is this birthright to me?”
25:33 Then Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” And he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread, and thick lentil stew, and he ate and drank. Then he got up and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.
26:1 Isaac and Abimelech
And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine which was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, to Gerar.
26:2 And Yahweh appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land which I will show to you.
26:3 Dwell as an alien in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham you father.
26:4 And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your descendants all these lands. And all nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring,
26:5 because Abraham listened to my voice and kept my charge: my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
NIRV translation
Genesis 25:19 - 26:5
25:19 Jacob and Esau
Here is the story of Abraham’s son Isaac.
Abraham was the father of Isaac.
25:20 Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram. She was also the sister of Laban the Aramean.
25:21 Rebekah couldn’t have children. So Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. And the Lord answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant.
25:22 The babies struggled with each other inside her. She said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to ask the Lord what she should do.
25:23 The Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your body.
Two tribes that are now inside you will be separated.
One nation will be stronger than the other.
The older son will serve the younger one.”
25:24 The time came for Rebekah to have her babies. There were twin boys in her body.
25:25 The first one to come out was red. His whole body was covered with hair. So they named him Esau.
25:26 Then his brother came out. His hand was holding onto Esau’s heel. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when Rebekah had them.
25:27 The boys grew up. Esau became a skillful hunter. He was a man who liked the open country. But Jacob was a quiet man. He stayed at home among the tents.
25:28 Isaac liked the meat of wild animals. So Esau was his favorite son. But Rebekah’s favorite was Jacob.
25:29 One day Jacob was cooking some stew. Esau came in from the open country. He was very hungry.
25:30 He said to Jacob, “Quick! Let me have some of that red stew! I’m very hungry!” That’s why he was also named Edom.
25:31 Jacob replied, “First sell me the rights that belong to you as the oldest son in the family.”
25:32 “Look, I’m dying of hunger,” Esau said. “What good are those rights to me?”
25:33 But Jacob said, “First promise me with an oath that you are selling me your rights.” So Esau promised to do it. He sold Jacob all of the rights that belonged to him as the oldest son.
25:34 Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. Esau ate and drank. Then he got up and left.
So Esau didn’t care anything at all about the rights that belonged to him as the oldest son.
26:1 Isaac and Abimelech
There was very little food in the land. The same thing had been true earlier, in Abraham’s time. Isaac went to Abimelech in Gerar. Abimelech was the king of the Philistines.
26:2 The Lord appeared to Isaac. He said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Live in the land where I tell you to live.
26:3 Stay here for a while. I will be with you and give you my blessing. I will give all of these lands to you and your children after you. And I will keep the promise I made with an oath to your father Abraham.
26:4 I will make your children after you as many as the stars in the sky. And I will give them all these lands. All nations on earth will be blessed because of your children.
26:5 “I will do all of those things because Abraham obeyed me. He did what I required. He kept my commands, my rules and my laws.”

Gospel — John 8:39 - 8:47
LEB translation
John 8:39 - 8:47
8:39 The Priority of Jesus Over Abraham
They answered and said to him, “Abraham is our father!” Jesus said to them, “If you are children of Abraham, do the deeds of Abraham!
8:40 But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who spoke to you the truth which I heard from God. This Abraham did not do.
8:41 You are doing the deeds of your father!”
They said to him, “We were not born from sexual immorality! We have one father, God!”
8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your father, you would love me, for I have come forth from God and have come. For I have not come from myself, but that one sent me.
8:43 Why do you not understand my way of speaking? Because you are not able to listen to my message.
8:44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father! That one was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth, because truth is not in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
8:45 But because I am telling the truth, you do not believe me.
8:46 Who among you convicts me concerning sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me?
8:47 The one who is from God listens to the words of God. Because of this you do not listen—because you are not of God.”
NIRV translation
John 8:39 - 8:47
8:39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
Jesus said, “Are you really Abraham’s children? If you are, you will do the things Abraham did.
8:40 But you have decided to kill me. I am a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do the things you want to do.
8:41 You are doing the things your own father does.”
“We are not children of people who weren’t married to each other,” they objected. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
8:42 The Children of the Devil
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me. I came from God, and now I am here. I have not come on my own. He sent me.
8:43 “Why aren’t my words clear to you? Because you can’t really hear what I say.
8:44 You belong to your father, the devil. You want to obey your father’s wishes.
“From the beginning, the devil was a murderer. He has never obeyed the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his natural language. He does this because he is a liar. He is the father of lies.
8:45 “But because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me!
8:46 Can any of you prove I am guilty of sinning? Am I not telling the truth? Then why don’t you believe me?
8:47 “Everyone who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you don’t hear is that you don’t belong to God.”
