LEB translation
Leviticus 19:33 - 20:7
19:33 “‘And when an alien dwells with you in your land, you shall not oppress him.
19:34 The alien who is dwelling with you shall be like a native among you, and you shall love him like yourself, because you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your God.
19:35 “‘You shall not commit injustice in regulation, in measurement, in weight, or volume.
19:36 You must have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin; I am Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt.
19:37 “‘Thus you shall keep all my statutes and all my regulations, and you shall do them; I am Yahweh.’”
20:1 Molech Worship and Spiritism
Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
20:2 “And to the Israelites you shall say, ‘If there is anyone from the Israelites or from the alien who is dwelling in Israel, who gives any of his offspring to Molech, he must surely be put to death; the people of the land must stone him with stones.
20:3 And I myself will set my face against that man, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people, because he has given some of his offspring to Molech, so that he makes my sanctuary unclean and profanes my holy name.
20:4 And if the people of the land ever shut their eyes from that man at his giving some of his offspring to Molech, not putting him to death,
20:5 then I myself will set my face against that man and against his clan, and I will cut him off and all those from the midst of their people who prostitute after Molech.
20:6 As for the person who turns to the mediums and the soothsayers to prostitute after them, I will set my face against that person, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people.
20:7 “‘And you shall consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy, because I am Yahweh your God.
NIRV translation
Leviticus 19:33 - 20:7
19:33 “‘Suppose an outsider lives with you in your land. Then do not treat him badly.
19:34 Treat him as if he were one of your own people. Love him as you love yourself. Remember that all of you were outsiders in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
19:35 “‘Be honest when you measure lengths, weights or amounts.
19:36 Use honest scales and honest weights. Use honest dry measures. And use honest liquid measures. I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt.
19:37 “‘Obey all of my rules and laws. Follow them. I am the Lord.’”
20:1 Israel Will Be Punished for Their Sins
The Lord spoke to Moses. He said,
20:2 “Say to the people of Israel, ‘Suppose a person sacrifices one of his children to the god Molech. It does not matter whether that person is an Israelite or an outsider who lives in Israel. He must be put to death. The people of the community must kill him by throwing stones at him.
20:3 I will turn against that man. I will cut him off from his people. That is because he sacrificed his child to Molech. He has made my sacred tent “unclean.” He has treated my name as if it were not holy.
20:4 “‘Suppose the people of the community close their eyes to the fact that the man sacrificed his child to Molech. And suppose they fail to put him to death.
20:5 Then I will turn against that man and his family. I will cut him off from his people. I will also cut off all those who follow him by joining themselves to Molech. They are not faithful to me.
20:6 “‘Suppose someone looks for advice from people who get messages from those who have died. Or he goes to people who talk to the spirits of the dead. And he follows their advice. Then he has not been faithful to me. So I will turn against him. I will cut him off from his people.
20:7 “‘Set yourselves apart for me. Be holy, because I am the Lord your God.

Gospel — Matthew 23:1-39
LEB translation
Matthew 23:1-39
23:1 Seven Woes Pronounced on the Scribes and Pharisees
Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,
23:2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses.
23:3 Therefore do and observe everything that they tell you, but do not do as they do, for they tell others to do something and do not do it themselves.
23:4 And they tie up heavy burdens and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing with their finger to move them.
23:5 And they do all their deeds in order to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries broad and make their tassels long.
23:6 And they love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues
23:7 and the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
23:8 But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ because one is your teacher, and you are all brothers,
23:9 And do not call anyone your father on earth, for one is your heavenly Father.
23:10 And do not be called teachers, because one is your teacher, the Christ.
23:11 And the greatest among you will be your servant.
23:12 And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
23:13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you shut the kingdom of heaven before people! For you do not enter, nor permit those wanting to go in to enter.
23:14 Verse text not available.
23:15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you travel around the sea and the dry land to make one convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are!
23:16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing! But whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound by his oath.’
23:17 Fools and blind people! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold holy?
23:18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing! But whoever swears by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.’
23:19 Blind people! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy?
23:20 Therefore the one who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything that is on it.
23:21 And the one who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
23:22 And the one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by the one who sits on it.
23:23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you pay a tenth of mint and dill and cumin, and neglect the more important matters of the law—justice and mercy and faithfulness! It was necessary to do these things while not neglecting those.
23:24 Blind guides who filter out a gnat and swallow a camel!
23:25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence!
23:26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.
23:27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and of everything unclean!
23:28 In the same way, on the outside you also appear righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
23:29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites!—because you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous,
23:30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the prophets!’
23:31 Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets!
23:32 And you—fill up the measure of your fathers!
23:33 Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How will you escape from the condemnation to hell?
23:34 For this reason, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and will pursue from town to town,
23:35 so that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel up to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
23:36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation!
23:37 The Lament over Jerusalem
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together the way a hen gathers her young together under her wings, and you were not willing!
23:38 Behold, your house has been left to you desolate!
23:39 For I tell you, you will never see me from now on until you say,
‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Matthew 23:1-39
23:1 Jesus Judges the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law
Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples.
23:2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat,” he said.
23:3 “So you must obey them. Do everything they tell you. But don’t do what they do. They don’t practice what they preach.
23:4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on other people’s shoulders. But they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.
23:5 “Everything they do is done for others to see. On their foreheads and arms they wear little boxes that hold Scripture verses. They make the boxes very wide. And they make the tassels on their coats very long.
23:6 “They love to sit down in the place of honor at dinners. They also love to have the most important seats in the synagogues.
23:7 They love to be greeted in the market places. They love it when people call them ‘Rabbi.’
23:8 “But you shouldn’t be called ‘Rabbi.’ You have only one Master, and you are all brothers.
23:9 Do not call anyone on earth ‘father.’ You have one Father, and he is in heaven.
23:10 You shouldn’t be called ‘teacher.’ You have one Teacher, and he is the Christ.
23:11 The most important person among you will be your servant.
23:12 Anyone who lifts himself up will be brought down. And anyone who is brought down will be lifted up.
23:13 “How terrible it will be for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter. And you will not let those enter who are trying to.
23:14 Verse text not available.
23:15 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You travel everywhere to win one person to your faith. Then you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
23:16 “How terrible for you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone takes an oath in the name of the temple, it means nothing. But anyone who takes an oath in the name of the gold of the temple must keep the oath.’
23:17 You are blind and foolish! Which is more important? Is it the gold? Or is it the temple that makes the gold holy?
23:18 “You also say, ‘If anyone takes an oath in the name of the altar, it means nothing. But anyone who takes an oath in the name of the gift on it must keep the oath.’
23:19 You blind men! Which is more important? Is it the gift? Or is it the altar that makes the gift holy?
23:20 “So anyone who takes an oath in the name of the altar takes an oath in the name of it and of everything on it.
23:21 And anyone who takes an oath in the name of the temple takes an oath in the name of it and of the One who lives in it.
23:22 And anyone who takes an oath in the name of heaven takes an oath in the name of God’s throne and of the One who sits on it.
23:23 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You give God a tenth of your spices, like mint, dill and cummin. But you have not practiced the more important things of the law, like fairness, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the last things without failing to do the first.
23:24 You blind guides! You remove the smallest insect from your food. But you swallow a whole camel!
23:25 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You clean the outside of the cup and dish. But on the inside you are full of greed. You only want to satisfy yourselves.
23:26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish. Then the outside will also be clean.
23:27 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You are like tombs that are painted white. They look beautiful on the outside. But on the inside they are full of the bones of the dead. They are also full of other things that are not pure and clean.
23:28 It is the same with you. On the outside you seem to be doing what is right. But on the inside you are full of what is wrong. You pretend to be what you are not.
23:29 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You build tombs for the prophets. You decorate the graves of the godly.
23:30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of those who lived before us, we wouldn’t have done what they did. We wouldn’t have helped to kill the prophets.’
23:31 So you give witness against yourselves. You admit that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets.
23:32 So finish the sins that those who lived before you started!
23:33 “You nest of poisonous snakes! How will you escape from being sentenced to hell?
23:34 So I am sending you prophets, wise men, and teachers. You will kill some of them. You will nail some to a cross. Others you will whip in your synagogues. You will chase them from town to town.
23:35 “So you will pay for all the godly people’s blood spilled on earth. I mean from the blood of godly Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berekiah. Zechariah was the one you murdered between the temple and the altar.
23:36 What I’m about to tell you is true. All this will happen to those who are now living.
23:37 “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. But you would not let me!
23:38 Look, your house is left empty.
23:39 I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’” ()
