Exodus 6:2 - 6:13

6:2 And God spoke to Moses, and he said to him, “I am Yahweh.

6:3 And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Shaddai, but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them.

6:4 And I not only established my covenant with them to give to them the land of Canaan, the land of their sojournings, in which they dwelt as aliens,

6:5 but also I myself heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are making to work, and I remembered my covenant.

6:6 Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the forced labor of Egypt, and I will deliver you from their slavery, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great punishments.

6:7 And I will take you as my people, and I will be your God, and you will know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the forced labor of Egypt.

6:8 And I will bring you to the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am Yahweh.”

6:9 And Moses spoke thus to the Israelites, but they did not listen to Moses, because of discouragement and because of hard work.

6:10 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

6:11 “Go, speak to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and let him release the Israelites from his land.”

6:12 And Moses spoke before Yahweh, saying, “Look, the Israelites do not listen to me, and how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am a poor speaker?”

6:13 And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and he commanded them to go to the Israelites and to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to bring the Israelites out from the land of Egypt.

Exodus 6:2 - 6:13

6:2 God continued, “I am the Lord.

6:3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as the Mighty God. But I did not show them the full meaning of my name, The Lord.

6:4 “I also made my covenant with them. I promised to give them the land of Canaan. That is where they lived as outsiders.

6:5 Also, I have heard the groans of the Israelites. The Egyptians are keeping them as slaves. But I have remembered my covenant.

6:6 “So tell the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord. I will throw off the heavy load the Egyptians have put on your shoulders. I will set you free from being slaves to them. I will reach out my arm and save you with mighty acts when I judge Egypt.

6:7 “‘I will take you to be my own people. I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God when I throw off the load the Egyptians have put on your shoulders.

6:8 “‘I will bring you to the land I promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I lifted up my hand and promised it to them. The land will belong to you. I am the Lord.’”

6:9 Moses reported those things to the Israelites. But they didn’t listen to him. That’s because they had lost all hope and had to work very hard.

6:10 Then the Lord said to Moses,

6:11 “Go. Tell Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to let the people of Israel leave his country.”

6:12 But Moses spoke to the Lord. “The people won’t listen to me,” he said. “So why would Pharaoh listen to me? After all, I don’t speak very well.”

6:13 The Family Line of Moses and Aaron The Lord had spoken to Moses and Aaron. He had talked with them about the Israelites and about Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. He had commanded Moses and Aaron to bring the people of Israel out of Egypt.

6:2 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר vay.da.Ber and/ he spoke אֱלֹהִ֖ים 'E.lo.Him God אֶל־ 'el- to מֹשֶׁ֑ה mo.Sheh Moses וַיֹּ֥אמֶר vai.Yo.mer and/ he said אֵלָ֖יו 'e.Lav to/ him אֲנִ֥י 'a.Ni I יְהוָֽה׃ Yah.weh [am] Yahweh

6:3 וָאֵרָ֗א va.'e.Ra' and/ I appeared אֶל־ 'el- to אַבְרָהָ֛ם 'av.ra.Ham Abraham אֶל־ 'el- to יִצְחָ֥ק yitz.Chak Isaac וְאֶֽל־ ve.'el- and/ to יַעֲקֹ֖ב ya.'a.Ko Jacob בְּאֵ֣ל be.'El <in>/ God שַׁדָּ֑י sha.Dai Almighty וּשְׁמִ֣י u.she.Mi and/ name/ my יְהוָ֔ה Yah.weh Yahweh לֹ֥א lo' not נוֹדַ֖עְתִּי no.Da'.ti I made myself known לָהֶֽם׃ la.Hem to <the>/ them

6:4 וְגַ֨ם ve.Gam and/ also הֲקִמֹ֤תִי ha.ki.Mo.ti I established אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> בְּרִיתִי֙ be.ri.Ti covenant/ my אִתָּ֔ם 'i.Tam with/ them לָתֵ֥ת la.Tet to/ give לָהֶ֖ם la.Hem to <the>/ them אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> אֶ֣רֶץ 'E.retz [the] land of כְּנָ֑עַן ke.Na.'an Canaan אֵ֛ת 'et <obj.> אֶ֥רֶץ 'E.retz [the] land of מְגֻרֵיהֶ֖ם me.gu.rei.Hem sojournings/ their אֲשֶׁר־ 'a.Sher- which גָּ֥רוּ Ga.ru they sojourned בָֽהּ׃ Vah in <the>/ it

6:5 וְגַ֣ם׀ ve.Gam and/ also אֲנִ֣י 'a.Ni I שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי sha.Ma'.ti I have heard אֶֽת־ 'et- <obj.> נַאֲקַת֙ na.'a.Kat [the] groaning of בְּנֵ֣י be.Nei [the] people of יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Yis.ra.'El Israel אֲשֶׁ֥ר 'a.Sher whom מִצְרַ֖יִם mitz.Ra.yim Egypt מַעֲבִדִ֣ים ma.'a.vi.Dim [are] compelling to labor אֹתָ֑ם 'o.Tam <obj.>/ them וָאֶזְכֹּ֖ר va.'ez.Kor and/ I have remembered אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> בְּרִיתִֽי׃ be.ri.Ti covenant/ my

6:6 לָכֵ֞ן la.Khen <to>/ therefore אֱמֹ֥ר 'e.Mor say לִבְנֵֽי־ liv.nei- to/ [the] people of יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל Yis.ra.'El Israel אֲנִ֣י 'a.Ni I יְהוָה֒ Yah.weh [am] Yahweh וְהוֹצֵאתִ֣י ve.ho.tze.Ti and/ I will bring out אֶתְכֶ֗ם 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you מִתַּ֙חַת֙ mi.Ta.chat from/ under סִבְלֹ֣ת siv.Lot [the] forced labor of מִצְרַ֔יִם mitz.Ra.yim Egypt וְהִצַּלְתִּ֥י ve.hi.tzal.Ti and/ I will deliver אֶתְכֶ֖ם 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you מֵעֲבֹדָתָ֑ם me.'a.vo.da.Tam from/ labor/ their וְגָאַלְתִּ֤י ve.ga.'al.Ti and/ I will redeem אֶתְכֶם֙ 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you בִּזְר֣וֹעַ biz.Ro.a' by/ an arm נְטוּיָ֔ה ne.tu.Yah outstretched וּבִשְׁפָטִ֖ים u.vish.fa.Tim and/ with/ acts of judgment גְּדֹלִֽים׃ ge.do.Lim great

6:7 וְלָקַחְתִּ֨י ve.la.kach.Ti and/ I will take אֶתְכֶ֥ם 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you לִי֙ li for <the>/ myself לְעָ֔ם le.'Am to/ a people וְהָיִ֥יתִי ve.ha.Yi.ti and/ I will become לָכֶ֖ם la.Khem for <the>/ you לֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים le.lo.Him <into>/ God וִֽידַעְתֶּ֗ם vi.da'.Tem and/ you will know כִּ֣י ki that אֲנִ֤י 'a.Ni I יְהוָה֙ Yah.weh [am] Yahweh אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם 'e.Lo.hei.Khem God/ your הַמּוֹצִ֣יא ha.mo.Tzi' who/ brought out אֶתְכֶ֔ם 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you מִתַּ֖חַת mi.Ta.chat from/ under סִבְל֥וֹת siv.Lot [the] forced labor of מִצְרָֽיִם׃ mitz.Ra.yim Egypt

6:8 וְהֵבֵאתִ֤י ve.he.ve.Ti and/ I will bring אֶתְכֶם֙ 'et.Khem <obj.>/ you אֶל־ 'el- into הָאָ֔רֶץ ha.'A.retz the/ land אֲשֶׁ֤ר 'a.Sher which נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ na.Sa.ti I lifted up אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> יָדִ֔י ya.Di hand/ my לָתֵ֣ת la.Tet to/ give אֹתָ֔הּ 'o.Tah <obj.>/ it לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם le.'av.ra.Ham to/ Abraham לְיִצְחָ֖ק le.yitz.Chak to/ Isaac וּֽלְיַעֲקֹ֑ב u.le.ya.'a.Ko and/ to/ Jacob וְנָתַתִּ֨י ve.na.ta.Ti and/ I will give אֹתָ֥הּ 'o.Tah <obj.>/ it לָכֶ֛ם la.Khem to <the>/ you מוֹרָשָׁ֖ה mo.ra.Shah a possession אֲנִ֥י 'a.Ni I יְהוָֽה׃ Yah.weh [am] Yahweh

6:9 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר vay.da.Ber and/ he spoke מֹשֶׁ֛ה mo.Sheh Moses כֵּ֖ן ken thus אֶל־ 'el- to בְּנֵ֣י be.Nei [the] people of יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Yis.ra.'El Israel וְלֹ֤א ve.Lo' and/ not שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ sha.me.'U they listened אֶל־ 'el- to מֹשֶׁ֔ה mo.Sheh Moses מִקֹּ֣צֶר mi.Ko.tzer from/ shortness of ר֔וּחַ Ru.ach spirit וּמֵעֲבֹדָ֖ה u.me.'a.vo.Dah and/ from/ labor קָשָֽׁה׃ פ ka.Shah hard

6:10 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר vay.da.Ber and/ he spoke יְהוָ֖ה Yah.weh Yahweh אֶל־ 'el- to מֹשֶׁ֥ה mo.Sheh Moses לֵּאמֹֽר׃ le.Mor <to>/ saying

6:11 בֹּ֣א bo' go דַבֵּ֔ר da.Ber speak אֶל־ 'el- to פַּרְעֹ֖ה par.'Oh Pharaoh מֶ֣לֶךְ Me.lekh [the] king of מִצְרָ֑יִם mitz.Ra.yim Egypt וִֽישַׁלַּ֥ח vi.sha.Lach so/ he may let go אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> בְּנֵֽי־ be.nei- [the] people of יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Yis.ra.'El Israel מֵאַרְצֽוֹ׃ me.'ar.Tzo from/ land/ his

6:12 וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר vay.da.Ber and/ he spoke מֹשֶׁ֔ה mo.Sheh Moses לִפְנֵ֥י lif.Nei <to>/ before יְהוָ֖ה Yah.weh Yahweh לֵאמֹ֑ר le.Mor <to>/ saying הֵ֤ן hen here! בְּנֵֽי־ be.nei- [the] people of יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Yis.ra.'El Israel לֹֽא־ lo'- not שָׁמְע֣וּ sha.me.'U they have listened אֵלַ֔י 'e.Lai to/ me וְאֵיךְ֙ ve.'eiKh and/ how? יִשְׁמָעֵ֣נִי yish.ma.'E.ni will he listen to/ me פַרְעֹ֔ה far.'Oh Pharaoh וַאֲנִ֖י va.'a.Ni and/ I עֲרַ֥ל 'a.Ral [am] uncircumcised of שְׂפָתָֽיִם׃ פ se.fa.Ta.yim lips

2:13 Levi Called to Follow Jesus And he went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he began to teach them.

2:14 And as he was passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me!” And he stood up and followed him.

2:15 And it happened that he was dining in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many and they were following him.

2:16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, began to say to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

2:17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

2:13 Καὶ And ἐξῆλθεν He went forth πάλιν again παρὰ beside τὴν the θάλασσαν, sea, καὶ and πᾶς all ὁ the ὄχλος crowd ἤρχετο was coming πρὸς to αὐτόν, Him, καὶ and ἐδίδασκεν He was teaching αὐτούς.¶ them.

2:14 Καὶ And παράγων passing on εἶδεν He saw Λευὶν Levi τὸν the [son] τοῦ <the> Ἁλφαίου of Alphaeus καθήμενον sitting ἐπὶ at τὸ the τελώνιον tax booth καὶ and λέγει He says αὐτῷ· to him; ἀκολούθει do follow μοι. Me. καὶ And ἀναστὰς having arisen ἠκολούθησεν he followed αὐτῷ.¶ Him.

2:15 Καὶ And γίνεται it came to pass ἐν ˍin τῷ ˍthe κατακεῖσθαι reclining αὐτὸν of Him ἐν in τῇ the οἰκίᾳ house αὐτοῦ, of him, καὶ that πολλοὶ many τελῶναι tax collectors καὶ and ἁμαρτωλοὶ sinners συνανέκειντο were reclining with τῷ <the> Ἰησοῦ Jesus καὶ and τοῖς with the μαθηταῖς disciples αὐτοῦ· of Him; ἦσαν there were γὰρ for πολλοί, many, καὶ and ἠκολούθουν they were following αὐτῷ. 2:16 καὶ And οἱ the γραμματεῖς scribes καὶ ˍ<and> τῶν of the Φαρισαίων Pharisees καὶ ₓ<and> ἰδόντες having seen ὅτι that ἐσθίει he eats μετὰ with τῶν the ἁμαρτωλῶν sinners καὶ and τελωνῶν tax collectors ἔλεγον were saying τοῖς to the μαθηταῖς disciples αὐτοῦ· of Him; τί ˍWhy [is it] ὅτι that μετὰ with τῶν the τελωνῶν tax collectors καὶ and ἁμαρτωλῶν sinners ἐσθίει He eats καὶ ˍˍand πίνει;¶ ˍˍdrinks?

2:17 Καὶ And ἀκούσας having heard ὁ <the> Ἰησοῦς Jesus λέγει says αὐτοῖς· to them: ὅτι ₊that οὐ No χρείαν need ἔχουσιν have οἱ those ἰσχύοντες being strong ἰατροῦ of a physician ἀλλ᾽ but οἱ those κακῶς sick ἔχοντες· being; οὐκ Not ἦλθον I came καλέσαι to call δικαίους [the] righteous ἀλλ᾽ but ἁμαρτωλούς sinners εἰς ˍˍinto μετάνοιαν.¶ ˍˍrepentance.
