Numbers 24:14 - 25:9
24:14 And now, look, I am about to go to my people; I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the following days.”
24:15 And he uttered his oracle and said,
“The declaration of Balaam son of Beor,
and the declaration of the man whose eye is closed,
24:16 the declaration of the hearer of God’s words,
and the knower of the knowledge of the Most High,
who sees the vision of Shaddai,
who is falling, and his eyes are revealed.
24:17 I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near;
a star will go out from Jacob,
and a scepter will rise from Israel;
it will crush the foreheads of Moab
and destroy all the children of Seth.
24:18 Edom will be a captive;
Seir, its enemies, will be a captive,
and Israel will be acting courageously.
24:19 Someone from Jacob will rule
and will destroy a remnant from the city.”
24:20 And he looked at Amalek, uttered his oracle, and said,
“Amalek is first of the nations,
but his future will be forever ruin.”
24:21 And he looked at the Kenites, uttered his oracle, and said,
“Steady is your dwelling place;
in the rock is your nest.
24:22 Nevertheless, the Kenite will be burned;
how long will Asshur keep you captive?”
24:23 Again he uttered his oracle and said,
“Woe, who will live when God establishes this?
24:24 The ships will come from the hand of the Kittim,
and they will afflict Asshur and will afflict Eber;
also he will be forever ruin.”
24:25 Then Balaam got up and went and returned to his place, and Balak also went on his way.
25:1 The Plague of Israel
When Israel dwelled in Shittim, the people began to prostitute themselves with the daughters of Moab.
25:2 And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and worshiped their gods.
25:3 So Israel was joined together to Baal Peor, and Yahweh became angry with Israel.
25:4 Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and kill them before the sun, so the fierce anger of Yahweh will turn from Israel.”
25:5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill his men who are joined together with Baal Peor.”
25:6 And behold, a man from the Israelites came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman before the eyes of Moses and before the eyes of all of the community of the Israelites, and they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of assembly.
25:7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest saw, he got up from the midst of the community and took a spear in his hand.
25:8 He went after the man of Israel into the woman’s section of the tent, and he drove the two of them, the man of Israel and the woman, into her belly. And the plague among the Israelites stopped.
25:9 The ones who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
NIRV translation
Numbers 24:14 - 25:9
24:14 “Now I’m going back to my people. But come. Let me warn you about what these people will do to your people in days to come.”
24:15 Balaam’s Fourth Message From God
Then Balaam spoke the message he had received from God. He said,
“Here is the message God gave Balaam, the son of Beor.
It’s the message God gave to the one who sees clearly.
24:16 It’s the message God gave to the one who hears the words of God.
The Most High God has given him knowledge.
He sees a vision from the Mighty One.
He falls down flat with his face toward the ground.
His eyes have been opened by the Lord.
24:17 “I see him, but I don’t see him now.
I view him, but he isn’t near.
A star will come from among the people of Jacob.
A king will rise up out of Israel.
He’ll crush the foreheads of the people of Moab.
He’ll crush the skulls of all of the sons of Sheth.
24:18 He’ll win the battle over Edom.
He’ll win the battle over his enemy Seir.
But Israel will grow strong.
24:19 A ruler will come from among the people of Jacob.
He’ll destroy those from the city who are still alive.”
24:20 Balaam’s Fifth Message From God
Then Balaam saw the people of Amalek. He spoke the message he had received from God. He said,
“Amalek was the first nation to attack Israel.
But they will finally be destroyed.”
24:21 Balaam’s Sixth Message From God
Then he saw the Kenites. He spoke the message he had received from God. He said,
“The place where you live is safe.
Your nest is on a high cliff.
24:22 But you Kenites will be destroyed.
Assyria will take you as prisoners.”
24:23 Balaam’s Seventh Message From God
Then he spoke the message he had received from God. He said,
“Who can live when God does this?
24:24 Ships will come from the shores of Kittim.
They will bring Assyria and Eber under their control.
But they themselves will also be destroyed.”
24:25 Then Balaam got up and returned home. And Balak went on his way.
25:1 Moab Leads Israel Down the Wrong Path
Israel was staying in Shittim. The men of Israel began to commit sexual sins with the women of Moab.
25:2 The women invited the men to feasts and sacrifices in honor of their gods. The people ate and bowed down in front of the statues of those gods.
25:3 So Israel joined in worshiping the god Baal that was worshiped at Peor. The Lord’s anger burned against Israel.
25:4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all of the leaders of these people. Kill them. Put their dead bodies out in the open. I want to see you do it in the middle of the day. Then my anger will not burn against Israel.”
25:5 So Moses spoke to Israel’s judges. He said, “Some of your men have joined in worshiping the god Baal that is worshiped at Peor. Each of you must kill the men in your tribe who have done that.”
25:6 Then a man of Israel brought a woman of Midian to his family. He did it right in front of the eyes of Moses and the whole community of Israel. They were sobbing at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
25:7 Phinehas was a priest. He was the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron. When Phinehas saw what had happened, he left the people. He took a spear in his hand.
25:8 He followed the man into a tent. Phinehas stuck the spear through both the man and the woman.
Then the Lord stopped the plague against the people of Israel.
25:9 But the plague had already killed 24,000 of them.

Gospel — Luke 22:14-23
LEB translation
Luke 22:14-23
22:14 The Lord’s Supper
And when the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him.
22:15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
22:16 For I tell you that I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
22:17 And he took in hand a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.
22:18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
22:19 And he took bread, and after giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
22:20 And in the same way the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you.
22:21 “But behold, the hand of the one who is betraying me is with me on the table!
22:22 For the Son of Man is going according to what has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!”
22:23 And they began to debate with one another who then of them it could be who was going to do this.
NIRV translation
Luke 22:14-23
22:14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles took their places at the table.
22:15 He said to them, “I have really looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you. I wanted to do this before I suffer.
22:16 I tell you, I will not eat the Passover meal again until it is celebrated in God’s kingdom.”
22:17 After Jesus took the cup, he gave thanks. He said, “Take this cup and share it among yourselves.
22:18 I tell you, I will not drink wine with you again until God’s kingdom comes.”
22:19 Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said, “This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do it in memory of me.”
22:20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup. He said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. It is poured out for you.
22:21 But someone here is going to hand me over to my enemies. His hand is with mine on the table.
22:22 The Son of Man will go to his death, just as God has already decided. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands him over!”
22:23 The apostles began to ask each other about this. They wondered which one of them would do it.
