Exodus 13:1 - 13:16

13:1 Unleavened Bread and Dedication of Firstborn to Commemorate the Rescue from Egypt And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

13:2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn, the first offspring of every womb among the Israelites, among humans and among domestic animals; it belongs to me.”

13:3 And Moses said to the people, “Remember this day when you went out from Egypt, from a house of slaves, because with strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from here, and food with yeast will not be eaten.

13:4 Today you are going out in the month of Abib.

13:5 And when Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites—which he swore to your ancestors to give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you will perform this service in this month.

13:6 Seven days you will eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day will be a feast for Yahweh.

13:7 Unleavened bread will be eaten the seven days; food with yeast will not be seen for you; and yeast will not be seen for you in all your territory.

13:8 And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘This is because of what Yahweh did for me when I came out from Egypt.’

13:9 And it will be as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes so that the law of Yahweh will be in your mouth, that with a strong hand Yahweh brought you out from Egypt.

13:10 And you will keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.

13:11 “And when Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your ancestors, and he gives it to you,

13:12 you will hand over every first offspring of a womb to Yahweh, and every first offspring dropped by a domestic animal that will belong to you, the males will be for Yahweh.

13:13 And every first offspring of a donkey you will redeem with small livestock, and if you will not redeem it, then you will break its neck, and every firstborn human among your sons you will redeem.

13:14 And when your son asks you in the future, saying, ‘What is this?’ you will say to him, ‘With strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from a house of slaves.

13:15 And when Pharaoh was stubborn to release us, Yahweh killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from firstborn human to firstborn domestic animal. Therefore I am sacrificing to Yahweh every first offspring of a womb, the males, and every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’

13:16 And it will be as a sign on your hand and as symbolic ornaments between your eyes that with strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt.”

Exodus 13:1 - 13:16

13:1 Setting Apart the Oldest Sons The Lord said to Moses,

13:2 “Set apart for me the first boy born in every family. The oldest son of every Israelite mother belongs to me. Every male animal that is born first to its mother also belongs to me.”

13:3 Then Moses said to the people, “Remember this day. It’s the day you came out of Egypt. That’s the land where you were slaves. The Lord used his mighty hand to bring you out of Egypt. Don’t eat anything that has yeast in it.

13:4 You are leaving today. It’s the month of Abib.

13:5 “The Lord will bring you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites. He took an oath and promised your people of long ago that he would give that land to you. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. When you get there, keep this holy day in this month.

13:6 “For seven days eat bread that is made without yeast. On the seventh day hold a feast in the Lord’s honor.

13:7 Eat bread that is made without yeast during those seven days. Nothing that has yeast in it should be found among you. No yeast should be seen anywhere inside your borders.

13:8 “On that day talk to your son. Tell him, ‘I’m doing this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’

13:9 “When you celebrate this day, it will be like a mark on your hand. It will be like a reminder on your forehead. The law of the Lord must be on your lips. The Lord used his mighty hand to bring you out of Egypt.

13:10 Obey this law at the appointed time year after year.

13:11 “The Lord will bring you into the land of Canaan. He will give it to you, just as he promised he would. He even took an oath when he made the promise to you and your people of long ago.

13:12 “After you arrive there, give to the Lord the oldest son of every mother. Every male animal that is born first to its mother among your livestock belongs to the Lord.

13:13 By sacrificing a lamb, buy back every male donkey that is born first to its mother. But if you don’t buy the donkey back, break its neck. Buy back every oldest son.

13:14 “In days to come, your son will ask you, ‘What does this mean?’ “When he does, say to him, ‘The Lord used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt. That’s the land where we were slaves.

13:15 Pharaoh was stubborn. He refused to let us go. So the Lord killed every oldest son in Egypt. He also killed every male animal that was born first to its mother. That’s why I sacrifice to the Lord every male animal that was born first. And that’s why I buy back each oldest son for him.’

13:16 “This day will be like a mark on your hand. It will be like a sign on your forehead. It will remind you that the Lord used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt.”

13:4 הַיּ֖וֹם hai.Yom this/ day אַתֶּ֣ם 'a.Tem you יֹצְאִ֑ים yo.tze.'Im [are] about to go out בְּחֹ֖דֶשׁ be.Cho.desh in/ [the] month of הָאָבִֽיב׃ ha.'a.Viv <the>/ Abib

13:5 וְהָיָ֣ה ve.ha.Yah and/ it will be כִֽי־ khi- that יְבִֽיאֲךָ֣ ye.vi.'a.Kha he will bring/ you יְהוָ֡ה Yah.weh Yahweh אֶל־ 'el- into אֶ֣רֶץ 'E.retz [the] land of הַֽ֠כְּנַעֲנִי Ha.ke.na.'a.ni the/ Canaanite[s] וְהַחִתִּ֨י ve.ha.chi.Ti and/ the/ Hittite[s] וְהָאֱמֹרִ֜י ve.ha.'e.mo.Ri and/ the/ Amorite[s] וְהַחִוִּ֣י ve.ha.chi.Vi and/ the/ Hivite[s] וְהַיְבוּסִ֗י ve.hay.vu.Si and/ the/ Jebusite[s] אֲשֶׁ֨ר 'a.Sher which נִשְׁבַּ֤ע nish.Ba' he swore לַאֲבֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ la.'a.vo.Tei.kha to/ ancestors/ your לָ֣תֶת La.tet to/ give לָ֔ךְ Lakh to/ you אֶ֛רֶץ 'E.retz a land זָבַ֥ת za.Vat flowing of חָלָ֖ב cha.Lav milk וּדְבָ֑שׁ u.de.Vash and/ honey וְעָבַדְתָּ֛ ve.'a.vad.Ta and/ you will serve אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה ha.'a.vo.Dah the/ service הַזֹּ֖את ha.Zot <the>/ this בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ ba.Cho.desh in the/ month הַזֶּֽה׃ ha.Zeh <the>/ this

13:6 שִׁבְעַ֥ת shiv.'At seven יָמִ֖ים ya.Mim days תֹּאכַ֣ל to.Khal you will eat מַצֹּ֑ת ma.Tzot unleavened bread<s> וּבַיּוֹם֙ u.vai.yOm and/ [will be] on the/ day הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י ha.she.vi.'I <the>/ seventh חַ֖ג chag a festival לַיהוָֽה׃ la.Yah.weh of/ Yahweh

13:7 מַצּוֹת֙ ma.tzOt unleavened bread<s> יֵֽאָכֵ֔ל ye.'a.Khel it will be eaten אֵ֖ת 'et <obj.> שִׁבְעַ֣ת shiv.'At [the] seven הַיָּמִ֑ים hai.ya.Mim the/ days וְלֹֽא־ ve.lo'- and/ not יֵרָאֶ֨ה ye.ra.'Eh it will be seen לְךָ֜ le.Kha by/ you חָמֵ֗ץ cha.Metz leaven וְלֹֽא־ ve.lo'- and/ not יֵרָאֶ֥ה ye.ra.'Eh it will be seen לְךָ֛ le.Kha by/ you שְׂאֹ֖ר se.'Or leaven בְּכָל־ be.khol in/ all גְּבֻלֶֽךָ׃ ge.vu.Le.kha territory/ your

13:8 וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ ve.hi.gad.Ta and/ you will tell לְבִנְךָ֔ le.vin.Kha to/ child/ your בַּיּ֥וֹם bai.Yom on the/ day הַה֖וּא ha.Hu' <the>/ that לֵאמֹ֑ר le.Mor <to>/ saying בַּעֲב֣וּר ba.'a.Vur for/sake of זֶ֗ה Zeh what עָשָׂ֤ה 'a.Sah he did יְהוָה֙ Yah.weh Yahweh לִ֔י Li for/ me בְּצֵאתִ֖י be.tze.Ti when/ came out/ I מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ mi.mitz.Ra.yim from/ Egypt

13:9 וְהָיָה֩ ve.ha.Yah and/ it will become לְךָ֨ le.Kha for/ you לְא֜וֹת le.'ot <into>/ a sign עַל־ 'al- on יָדְךָ֗ ya.de.Kha hand/ your וּלְזִכָּרוֹן֙ u.le.zi.ka.rOn and/ <into>/ a reminder בֵּ֣ין bein between עֵינֶ֔יךָ 'ei.Nei.kha eyes/ your לְמַ֗עַן le.Ma.'an so that תִּהְיֶ֛ה tih.Yeh <it> may be תּוֹרַ֥ת to.Rat [the] law of יְהוָ֖ה Yah.weh Yahweh בְּפִ֑יךָ be.Fi.kha in/ mouth/ your כִּ֚י ki for בְּיָ֣ד be.Yad by/ a hand חֲזָקָ֔ה cha.za.Kah strong הוֹצִֽאֲךָ֥ ho.tzi.'a.Kha he brought out/ you יְהֹוָ֖ה Yah.weh Yahweh מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ mi.mitz.Ra.yim from/ Egypt

13:10 וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֛ ve.sha.mar.Ta and/ you will keep אֶת־ 'et- <obj.> הַחֻקָּ֥ה ha.chu.Kah the/ statute הַזֹּ֖את ha.Zot <the>/ this לְמוֹעֲדָ֑הּ le.mo.'a.Dah to/ appointed time/ its מִיָּמִ֖ים mi.ya.Mim from/ days יָמִֽימָה׃ ס ya.Mi.mah days/ towards

13:11 וְהָיָ֞ה ve.ha.Yah and/ it will be כִּֽי־ ki- that יְבִֽאֲךָ֤ ye.vi.'a.Kha he will bring/ you יְהוָה֙ Yah.weh Yahweh אֶל־ 'el- into אֶ֣רֶץ 'E.retz [the] land of הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י ha.ke.na.'a.Ni the/ Canaanite[s] כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר ka.'a.Sher just/ as נִשְׁבַּ֥ע nish.Ba' he swore לְךָ֖ le.Kha to/ you וְלַֽאֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ ve.la.'a.vo.Tei.kha and/ to/ ancestors/ your וּנְתָנָ֖הּ u.ne.ta.Nah and/ he will give/ it לָֽךְ׃ Lakh to/ you

13:12 וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ֥ ve.ha.'a.var.Ta and/ you will dedicate כָל־ khol- every פֶּֽטֶר־ pe.ter- firstborn of רֶ֖חֶם Re.chem a womb לַֽיהֹוָ֑ה la.Yah.weh to/ Yahweh וְכָל־ ve.khol and/ every פֶּ֣טֶר׀ Pe.ter firstborn of שֶׁ֣גֶר She.ger [the] offspring of בְּהֵמָ֗ה be.he.Mah cattle אֲשֶׁ֨ר 'a.Sher which יִהְיֶ֥ה yih.Yeh it will be[long] לְךָ֛ le.Kha to/ you הַזְּכָרִ֖ים ha.ze.kha.Rim the/ males לַיהוָֽה׃ la.Yah.weh [will belong] to/ Yahweh

13:13 וְכָל־ ve.khol and/ every פֶּ֤טֶר Pe.ter firstborn of חֲמֹר֙ cha.Mor a donkey תִּפְדֶּ֣ה tif.Deh you will redeem בְשֶׂ֔ה ve.Seh with/ a sheep וְאִם־ ve.'im- and/ if לֹ֥א lo' not תִפְדֶּ֖ה tif.Deh you will redeem [it] וַעֲרַפְתּ֑וֹ va.'a.raf.To and/ you will break neck/ its וְכֹ֨ל ve.Khol and/ every בְּכ֥וֹר be.Khor firstborn of אָדָ֛ם 'a.Dam humankind בְּבָנֶ֖יךָ be.va.Nei.kha among/ sons/ your תִּפְדֶּֽה׃ tif.Deh you will redeem

4:35 Calming of a Storm And on that day, when it was evening, he said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”

4:36 And leaving the crowd, they took him along, as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him.

4:37 And a great storm of wind developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already being filled with water.

4:38 And he was in the stern sleeping on the cushion, and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, is it not a concern to you that we are perishing?”

4:39 And he woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Be quiet! Be silent!” And the wind abated and there was a great calm.

4:40 And he said to them, “Why are you fearful? Do you not yet have faith?”

4:41 And they were terribly frightened and began to say to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
