Exodus 13:17 - 14:8
13:17 Summary of Travel
And when Pharaoh released the people, God did not lead them the way of the land of the Philistines, though it was nearer, because God said, “Lest the people change their mind when they see war and return to Egypt.”
13:18 So God led the people around by the way of the desert to the Red Sea, and the Israelites went up in battle array from the land of Egypt.
13:19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites solemnly swear an oath, saying, “God will surely attend to you, and you will take up my bones from here with you.”
13:20 And they set out from Succoth, and they encamped at Etham on the edge of the desert.
13:21 And Yahweh was going before them by day in a column of cloud to lead them on the way and by night in a column of fire to give light to them to go by day and night.
13:22 The column of cloud by day and the column of fire by night did not depart from before the people.
14:1 Yahweh Rescues Israel at the Red Sea
And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
14:2 “Speak to the Israelites so that they turn and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; before Baal Zephon, which is opposite it, you will camp by the sea.
14:3 And Pharaoh will say of the Israelites, ‘They are wandering around in the land. The desert has closed in on them.’
14:4 And I will harden the heart of Pharaoh, and he will chase after them, and I will be glorified through Pharaoh and through all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh.” And they did so.
14:5 And it was told to the king of Egypt that the people fled, and the heart of Pharaoh was changed and that of his servants toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have released Israel from serving us!”
14:6 And he harnessed his chariot and took with him his people.
14:7 And he took six hundred select chariots and all the chariots of Egypt and officers over all of them.
14:8 And Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and he chased after the Israelites. (Now the Israelites were going out boldly.)
NIRV translation
Exodus 13:17 - 14:8
13:17 Israel Goes Through the Red Sea
Pharaoh let the people go. The shortest road from Goshen to Canaan went through the Philistine country. But God didn’t lead them that way. God said, “If they have to go into battle, they might change their minds. They might return to Egypt.”
13:18 So God led the people toward the Red Sea by taking them on a road through the desert. The Israelites were prepared for battle when they went up out of Egypt.
13:19 Moses took the bones of Joseph along with him. Joseph had made the sons of Israel take an oath and make a promise. He had said, “I’m sure that God will come to help you. When he does, you must carry my bones up from this place with you.” ()
13:20 The people left Succoth. They camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.
13:21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud. It guided them on their way. At night he led them with a pillar of fire. It gave them light. So they could travel by day or at night.
13:22 The pillar of cloud didn’t leave its place in front of the people during the day. And the pillar of fire didn’t leave its place at night.
14:1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses.
14:2 He said, “Tell the people of Israel to turn back. Have them camp near Pi Hahiroth between Migdol and the Red Sea. They must camp by the sea, right across from Baal Zephon.
14:3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The people of Israel are wandering around the land. They don’t know which way to go. The desert is all around them.’
14:4 “I will make Pharaoh’s heart stubborn. He will chase them. But I will gain glory for myself because of what will happen to Pharaoh and his whole army. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” So the Israelites camped by the Red Sea.
14:5 The king of Egypt was told that the people had gotten away. Then Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them. They said, “What have we done? We’ve let the people of Israel go! We’ve lost our slaves and all of the work they used to do for us!”
14:6 So he had his chariot made ready. He took his army with him.
14:7 He took 600 of the best chariots in Egypt. He also took along all of the other chariots. Officers were in charge of all of them.
14:8 The Lord made the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, stubborn. So he chased the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.

Gospel — Mark 5:1 - 5:20
LEB translation
Mark 5:1 - 5:20
5:1 A Demon-possessed Gerasene Healed
And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.
5:2 And as he was getting out of the boat, immediately from the tombs a man with an unclean spirit went to meet him,
5:3 who lived among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him any longer, not even with a chain,
5:4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles had been shattered. And no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5:5 And during every night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
5:6 And when he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him.
5:7 And crying out with a loud voice he said, “What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you by God, do not torment me!”
5:8 (For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”)
5:9 And he was asking him “What is your name?” And he said to him, “My name is Legion, because we are many.”
5:10 And he was imploring him many times that he would not send them out of the region.
5:11 Now a large herd of pigs was there at the hill feeding,
5:12 and they implored him, saying, “Send us to the pigs so that we may enter into them.”
5:13 And he permitted them. And the unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand—rushed headlong down the steep slope into the sea and were drowned in the sea.
5:14 And their herdsmen fled and reported it in the town and in the countryside, and they came to see what it was that had happened.
5:15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there clothed and in his right mind—the one who had had the legion—and they were afraid.
5:16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs.
5:17 And they began to urge him to depart from their region.
5:18 And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed began to implore him that he could go with him.
5:19 And he did not permit him, but said to him, “Go to your home to your people and tell them all that the Lord has done for you, and that he has had mercy on you.”
5:20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him, and they were all astonished.
NIRV translation
Mark 5:1 - 5:20
5:1 Jesus Heals a Man Controlled by Demons
They went across the Sea of Galilee to the area of the Gerasenes.
5:2 Jesus got out of the boat. A man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
5:3 The man lived in the tombs. No one could keep him tied up anymore. Not even a chain could hold him.
5:4 His hands and feet had often been chained. But he tore the chains apart. And he broke the iron cuffs on his ankles. No one was strong enough to control him.
5:5 Night and day he screamed among the tombs and in the hills. He cut himself with stones.
5:6 When he saw Jesus a long way off, he ran to him. He fell on his knees in front of him.
5:7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God, what do you want with me? Promise before God that you won’t hurt me!”
5:8 This was because Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”
5:9 Then Jesus asked the demon, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,” he replied. “There are many of us.”
5:10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
5:11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
5:12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs. Let us go into them.”
5:13 Jesus allowed it. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs in the herd. The whole herd rushed down the steep bank. They ran into the lake and drowned.
5:14 Those who were tending the pigs ran off. They told the people in the town and countryside what had happened. The people went out to see for themselves.
5:15 Then they came to Jesus. They saw the man who had been controlled by many demons. He was sitting there. He was now dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid.
5:16 Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man. They told about the pigs as well.
5:17 Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area.
5:18 Jesus was getting into the boat. The man who had been controlled by demons begged to go with him.
5:19 Jesus did not let him. He said, “Go home to your family. Tell them how much the Lord has done for you. Tell them how kind he has been to you.”
5:20 So the man went away. In the area known as the Ten Cities, he began to tell how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
